Anne Seelbach is currently taking a tough college test - this time as a teacher, rather than as a student. Seelbach is spending the fall 2008 semester teaching history at Northwest High School in Jackson.
Student teaching is the culmination of Albion College's comprehensive teacher education program, which includes a wide variety of coursework and in-the-classroom experiences. A unique partnership between Albion College's Education department, the Albion College Fritz Shurmur Education Institute and Albion Public Schools provides Albion College students with unique opportunities to excel as educators from the beginning of their careers.
With completion of student teaching, Seelbach has finished her Albion College degree in history education with a minor in political science. She is the daughter of Paul and Arlene Seelbach of Gregory and a graduate of Chelsea High School.
Christmas Eve service
St. John's United Church of Christ is hosting a country Christmas Eve at 7:30 tonight. The little white church with its stained-glass windows is located half way between Chelsea and Manchester on Waters Road. Your heart will be lightened with Christmas carols, scriptures and more. The service will end with a candle lighting ceremony and the church will be decorated for Christmas with a tree, poinsettias, greens and candles. For information, call 734-475-3046.
Christian rock
The St. Paul United Church of Christ youth ministries groups are hosting a baked potato dinner to raise funds to bring Lost and Found, a Christian rock duo, to Chelsea. The fund-raiser is being held on Jan. 10, 2009 at St. Paul, 14600 E. Old U.S. 12 in Chelsea. Hot baked potatoes with lots of fixings will be served, value priced at $5. Chili is also on the menu. The event runs from 4 - 7 p.m. Anyone is welcome to attend; no reservations are needed. The Lost and Found concert will be held April 18 at St. Paul. Their concerts can feel like a gathering of friends. The music is organic and fun, and the lyrics comment on life, faith, travel, friends and relationships. Tickets for the concert go on sale in January. More information about Lost and Found can be obtained on their Web site at www.speedwood.com.
Tax service business moves
Liberty Tax Service has "refilled" its location because of the fire in May at the Chelsea Crossing shopping mall.
"At the time of the fire we were told we should be able to move back in within 90 days, then the estimate was by mid December," explained Jim Mumma, owner of the local business. "The latest I heard from my landlord was that they would put a trailer up for me in the parking lot, but they could not get approval until the third week in January. That is too late for a seasonal tax office to open so we have leased another location and are in the process of setting up the office."
Mumma and his staff will open soon at 1290-B South Main St., next to the Flagstar Bank and across M-52 from Polly's Country Market.
"We will be open for business the first week of January," said Mumma. "We honor all competitor coupons, we offer free pick up and delivery of a client's tax paperwork, we offer fund-raising programs for charitable groups, we are a cell phone for soldiers drop off location as well as contributor and collection site for the March of Dimes March for Babies annual appeal. We also offer free tax returns for active military personnel."

Dexter blood drive Jan. 5
Most people don't think of donating blood during the holidays. For that reason, it is the time when the blood bank has an extremely low supply. Your donation of blood is needed at The Dexter Community Winter Blood Drive being held on January 5, 2009, from 1 PM to 7 PM at St. Andrew's United Church of Christ, 7610 Ann Arbor St., Dexter, MI. Walk-ins are welcome or make an appointment by calling 1-800-GIVE LIFE and ask for the Dexter Community Drive. Your support is vital.
Schauer swearing-in

"We have a long way to go, but I promise to do whatever it takes to make sure our workers and businesses can compete in the 21st Century economy."
The Jackson event will be from noon to 1 p.m. at Jackson City Council Chambers, 161 W Michigan Ave, Jackson.
Art exhibit
"The Mind's Eye/Different Views" is the title of an upcoming exhibit at Sweetwater's Cafe gallery, 123 W. Washington St., Ann Arbor. Local artists Judy Enright, Barbara Goodsitt and Nicki Griffith will be displaying their work Jan. 5 until March 2. The three painters, all members of Ann Arbor Women Artists, work in diverse media, oil, colored pencil and wax/oil pastel and their styles and subject matter represent mythological connection, contemporary realism and organic abstraction.
The work can be viewed during the Cafe's regular business hours.
