Samuel E. Birgy will be a freshman at Northwood University this fall and is recipient of the Freedom Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year. The Freedom Scholarship is $7,500 per year with renewal options yearly if criteria is met.

The Freedom Scholarship is awarded to a student who has exhibited academic excellence during their high school years.

Birgy graduated from Chelsea High School this spring and will work toward a business degree from Northwood University. He is the son of Mark and Suzanne Birgy of Chelsea.

Howe Military School, a private co-educational school, grades 5-12, located in Northeastern Indiana, has announced their Headmaster's List for the sixth six-week grading period of the 2007-08 school year.

Cadet Connor Trinske, a 9th grader at Howe and the son of Victoria and Mark Trinske of Dexter, received this special award by attaining at least a 3.0 B average in his studies in a college prep curriculum.

Cadet Trinske has been attending Howe Military School since January 2008.

The following students from Chelsea were on the Dean's List during the past term at Madonna University in Livonia.

Kali Burnette, Amanda Galarowic, Anna Lussier and Kaitlyn Williams.

Albion College Dean's List for the spring 2008 semester include:

Matthew Galaska majoring in biology, the son of Norman and Susan Galaska of Manchester and a graduate of Chelsea High School.

Alexandra Goss majoring in psychology, the daughter of Steven and Karen Goss of Dexter and a graduate of Dexter High School.

Meredith Holman majoring in philosophy and minoring in English is the daughter of Timothy Holman of Chelsea and Rita Welch of Chelsea. Holman is a Chelsea High School graduate.

Halley Sissom graduated from Albion College in May 2008 with a degree in economics and management and English. She was also in the Dean's List for the spring 2008 semester. Sissom is the daughter of Larry and Virginia Sissom of Chelsea and a graduate of Chelsea High School.

Michael Kundak-Cowall, a Chelsea resident, is a 2008 graduate of Cranbrook Kingswood School in Bloomfield Hills.

Commencement exercises were held June 6 at Christ Church Cranbrook. He will be attending Michigan Technological University in Houghton this fall with a MTU Presidential Distinction Scholarship, a University Student Award, the Michigan Competitive Scholarship and the Michigan Promise Scholarship.

His parents are Jeff Cowall and Jennifer Kundak of Chelsea.

Richard Kinsey and Amy Whitesall, both of Chelsea, were on the Dean's List at Olivet College for the 2008 spring semester.

Thomas Rich of Dexter was on the Dean's List at Northern Michigan University for the winter 2008 semester.

Clayton Simons of Dexter graduated from Wittenberg University May 10, 2008 with a degree in Political Science.

The University of Michigan College of Engineering Dean's List for the winter term 2008 includes:

Abram Booth, Maxwell Booth, Stefan Kalmbach, Lindsay Parker, Jeremy Richardson, Andrew Sereno, Elizabeth Spencer and Max Wineland, all of Chelsea.

Jonathan Carender, Lindsay Ewing, Victor Krug, Brian McNally and Suzannah, all of Dexter.

The following high school seniors were selected to receive the University of Michigan Regents Merit Scholars a $1,500 (non-renewable) based on their grades, class ranking and test scores.

From Dexter includes: Brittany Batell, Erin Dagg, Nora Green, Cassandra Hall, Anthony McCoy, Paul Nagel, Timothy Pituch, James Priestley and Megan Ullmann. From Chelsea is Michael Sullivan.

Laura Strader, a 2008 graduate of Chelsea High School has enrolled as a freshman at The University of Findlay for the 2008-09 academic year. Strader will be majoring in Equine Business Management. In high school she was active in equestrian and FFA, and was awarded the Findlay Award from the University. She is the daughter of Beth and James Strader of Chelsea.

Cadet Philip James Steenstra, son of Jim and Lou Steenstra of Ann Arbor, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy on May 31, 2008.

Steenstra graduated from Dexter High School in 2004. While at West Point, he concentrated his studies in Life Science with Honors. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army within the Engineers branch and will report to Fort Campbell, Ky. for his first assignment.
