Chelsea softball hosted its own quad tournament last Friday, advancing to the finals before losing 3-2 to Eaton Rapids.

"They're a good team," said Chelsea coach Robin Raymond. "We couldn't string enough hits together."

The Bulldogs (21-11-1) ended up with five hits against the Greyhounds.

Chelsea opened up a 2-0 first inning lead, as senior Brogan Darwin was hit by a pitch to start the frame. Senior Annie Hollandsworth followed with an RBI triple plating Darwin. Sophomore Shelby Platt connected for an RBI single bringing home Hollandsworth and giving the Bulldogs their early advantage.

Eaton Rapids chipped away at Chelsea's lead and entered the seventh inning tied at 2-2 with the Bulldogs. The Greyhounds scored the game-winning run in the stanza on two hits and an error.

Senior Kelly Whitley suffered the loss from the circle for Chelsea. She allowed two earned runs, struck out eight and walked one.

In the quad's opening contest, the Bulldogs defeated Ypsilanti 5-1.

Sophomore Kaley Dixon recorded the win from the rubber tossing a four-hitter, striking out nine and walking two.

Chelsea pounded out nine hits, led by Platt who had a double and home run. Platt's over-the-fence roundtripper was her first of the season.

On May 19, the visiting Bulldogs swept a doubleheader from Saline winning 6-2, 6-0.

"They beat us easily the first time around," Raymond said. "It was nice to see how much we've improved."

In the first game, Whitley picked up the victory allowing five hits, no earned runs, striking out three and walking one.

The fifth inning turned the contest around as Chelsea scored three runs to take control of the game. Getting hits in the frame were Hollandsworth with an RBI triple, Platt with an RBI and Darwin with a single.

Overall for the contest, Darwin paced the Bulldogs with three hits, including a double.

Senior Lizzy Bentley, senior Rachel Voicechovski and Hollandsworth each had two hits for Chelsea.

In Game 2, Dixon earned the win yielding five hits, fanning 10 and walking two.

"Both Kelly and Kaley have done a great job with their control this season," Raymond said. "They're making the other team put the ball in play. They're not giving them any free passes. Our defense has also played well."

In the fifth inning, the Bulldogs put the game away scoring four runs on four straight hits. Bentley, Platt, Voicechovski and Whitley each had consecutive singles for Chelsea. Also getting a hit in the inning was Hollandsworth with a double.

For the contest, freshman Ellie Stoffer and Platt each finished with three hits to spark the Bulldogs. Darwin and Voicechovski each had two hits.

Chelsea next hosts a Division 2 state district Saturday. The Bulldogs face Adrian in a district semifinal at 10 a.m. At noon, defending Division 2 state champion Tecumseh takes on the winner of Jackson Northwest-Onsted in the other district semifinal.

The district final is Saturday at 3 p.m.

Despite the presence of the defending state champs, Raymond remained confident his club could succeed.

"If we play our best softball, we can come away with a district title," he said.
