Chelsea captures regional title

Chelsea's girls' track and field team finished first overall at last Friday's Division 2 state regional meet at Livonia Ladywood.

The Bulldogs captured a regional championship with 88 points.
Placing second was Ypsilanti with 87 points, while Dexter was third with 73.5 points, Tecumseh fourth with 69 points and Carleton-Airport fifth with 68 points.
"We ran extremely well today," said Chelsea coach Pat Clarke. "We beat a very good Ypsilanti team that was ranked second in the state."
In field events, Cassie Coffman finished third in the pole vault with a state meet qualifying height of 9-feet.
Jillian Fischer was first in the discus with a state meet and personal best toss of 121-7. She placed second in the shot put with a state-qualifying throw of 35-4.
In the 100 meters, Erin Benjamin was second in 12.7, while Corinne Carpenter was third in 13.3. Both times qualified for the state meet.
Benjamin finished first in the 200 meters with a state time of 26.3, while Olivia DeTroyer was fifth in 27.6.
DeTroyer was first in the 400-meter run with a state meet, sophomore school record and personal best clocking of 57.3. DeTroyer's time is the fastest in the state in Division 2 heading into the final.
In the 800-meter relay, Christina Coffman, DeTroyer, Carpenter and Benjamin finished first with a school record and state meet time of 1:46.2.
Cassie Coffman, DeTroyer, Carpenter and Benjamin placed second in the 1,600-meter relay in a state qualifying 4:08.1.
Katrina Williams, Christina Coffman, Victoria Kingsinger and Carpenter ended up third in 52.6 in the 400-meter relay.
Julie Beaumont, Nichole Hopp, Courtney Maher and Jenny Squires crossed the line seventh in the 3,200-meter relay in 10:44.5.
"The highlight of the meet was junior Erin Benjamin's performance," Clarke said. "Erin had to run eight races on the day. She also anchored the 800-meter relay to win in a new school record. This broke a 32-year old school record by .5 seconds. Finally, Erin anchored the 1,600-meter relay coming from 20 meters back to place second and win us the regional team championship."
On May 12, host Chelsea defeated Dexter 99-38 in a dual meet.
With the win, the Bulldogs finished 4-0 in dual meets this year.
"In all, we had a very good day," Clarke said. "The girls deserve a great deal of credit for this outstanding dual meet season. We hope we can continue this effort at regionals."
In field events, Fischer was first in the shot put with a throw of 37-2, while Ashlee Walker was second with a 30-8 and Meghan Smith third with a 28-8.
In the discus, Fischer was first with a toss of 115-9, while Walker was second with a 75-4 and Marissa Elwart was third with a 67-5.
Christina Coffman was first in the long jump with a leap of 14-4.
Squires was third in the high jump with a 4-6.
In the 100-meter hurdles, Williams was first in a personal best 17.3, while Jenna McGrath was second in a personal best 17.9 and Kingsinger third in 18.5.
Williams was also first in the 300-meter hurdles in 51.9, while Kingsinger was second in 53.1.
Benjamin was first in the 100 meters in 12.73, while Carpenter was second in 12.78.
Benjamin was also first in the 200 meters with a time of 26.2. DeTroyer was second in 27.1, while Christina Coffman was third in 28.4.
DeTroyer broke the tape first in the 400-meter run in 59.8, while McGrath was third in 1:06.1.
Hopp ended up second in the 800-meter run in 2:37.3, while Beaumont was third in 2:41.3.
Beaumont was second in the 1,600-meter run in 5:51.7, while Katie Lindauer was third in 6:18.4.
Maher was first in the 3,200-meter run in a personal best 12:49.2, while Samantha Newbound was second in 12:51.6 and Squires third in 15:08.
Christina Coffman, Williams, Kingsinger and Carpenter placed first in the 400-meter relay with a clocking of 53.1.
Christina Coffman, DeTroyer, Carpenter and Benjamin finished first in the 800-meter relay in 1:48.1.
Carpenter, McGrath, Benjamin and Hopp crossed the line first in the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 4:31.
Chelsea next travels to the county meet in Ypsilanti Tuesday.
