Carpenter breaks school record

By Don Richter, Sports Editor

Chelsea's boys' track and field team participated in the Golden Triangle meet in Ypsilanti last Saturday.

Leading the Bulldogs was junior Evan Carpenter who finished first in the 110-meter hurdles with a school record time of 14.38.

"That was the highlight of the meet," said Chelsea coach Eric Swager. "He broke Dave McLaughlin's 42-year-old school record with his sizzling 14.38 clocking. He (Carpenter) has natural hurdling ability, but his work ethic has improved his form and fitness. He will only improve as he gets stronger."

Placing third in the 110-meter hurdles for Chelsea was junior Justin McGrath in a lifetime best 15.28.

In the pole vault, Peter Wilke finished third with a sophomore class record of 11-feet, six inches.

Junior Sam Dyer placed third in the shot put with a heave of 42-11, while junior Tyler Ball was fifth with a 42-3. Ball was also fifth in the discus with a throw of 125-2.

Senior Danny Ngo finished first in the long jump with a distance of 19-8. He also was second in the 100 meters in 11.4 for the Bulldogs.

Senior Brendan Smith broke the tape first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.3.

On May 1, visiting Chelsea defeated Tecumseh 91-41 in a dual meet.

With the win, the Bulldogs finished the season unbeaten in dual meets.

"We were able to run the table in dual meets this year," Swager said. "We are in great position as we head towards the SEC (Southeastern Conference) Jamboree and SEC White championships to repeat as SEC champs."

Against the Indians, Swager said Chelsea was a little banged up health-wise.

"We were missing five of our top scorers due to various reasons," he said. "Still, when we competed, we competed hard. It was enough to handle Tecumseh."

In field events, Ball placed second in the shot put with a throw of 44-10.

In discus, senior Mark Bowdish was second with a lifetime best toss of 123-9.

In the long jump, Ngo finished first with a 19-2 mark. Antwan McClendon was second with an 18-11, while senior Troy Holdreith was third with a lifetime best distance of 17-11 for the Bulldogs.

Wilke placed first in the pole vault for Chelsea clearing 10-0. Sophomore Noah Herman was second also with a lifetime best mark of 10-0.

McClendon was first in the high jump with a height of 5-10. Carpenter was second recording a 5-8.

Carpenter was first in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.9. He also was first in the 300-meter hurdles in a lifetime best 40.7. McGrath was second in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.6. He also was second in the 300-meter hurdles in 43.5.

Freshman Nick Hill finished first in the 100 meters with a clocking of 11.6. McClendon was second in 11.8.

Ngo crossed the line first in the 400-meter run with a lifetime best time of 52.2. Brendan Smith was a blink of an eye lash behind in second with a 52.5.

Junior Ryan Patrick placed second in the 800-meter run in a lifetime best 2:17 for the Bulldogs.

In the 1,600-meter run, Brendan Smith bested the field finishing first in 4:59. Sophomore Mark Smith was third in 5:05.

Sophomore Nick Hewitt was first in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:47. Junior Teddy Eyster was second in 10:54, while freshman Nick Hall was third in a lifetime best 11:04 for Chelsea.

The Bulldog foursome of Hill, McClendon, McGrath and Hermann placed first in the 800-meter relay in 1:38.0.

"I really enjoy the individual improvement as the season progresses," Swager said. "Our big goal is to qualify as many runners for the state finals as possible. If we become and remain healthy, this could be the most successful (Chelsea) team ever."

Chelsea next travels to Jackson Northwest to participate in it invitational Saturday at 9 a.m.
