"The first 20 minutes of the game was played fairly evenly," said Chelsea coach Chris Orlandi. "Both teams had good chances. Late in the first half, the wheels came off."
With 5:26 left in the first half, Pioneer scored off of a free kick, for a 1-0 lead.
"It would have been really big for us to get out of the half without surrendering that goal," Orlandi said.
In the second half, the Bulldogs (8-2, 2-2 Southeastern Conference) came out somewhat flat.
Ann Arbor took advantage of Chelsea's sluggishness scoring two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half for the game's final margin.
"We had some miscommunication in our back line and a Pioneer forward just outworked us to flip a ball over (Chelsea keeper) Maggie (Manville) before she could get to it," Orlandi said. "The third goal looked much like the first. Maggie made an outstanding save to steer a tough shot into the crossbar. Pioneer was just in the right place to get the rebound.
"They were very aggressive on offense and we were not anticipating things. This is a really discouraging result, but we're still in the thick of the SEC race with Dexter losing to Saline. It should be an exciting race for the title."
Pioneer out-shot the Bulldogs 13-8.
