Chelsea splits with Adrian

Chelsea softball continues playing well, winning eight out of its last 10 games and three out of its last four.

Last Monday, the host Bulldogs (14-6-1, 7-3 Southeastern Conference) split a doubleheader with Adrian winning 3-1 and losing 5-1.
In the opener, senior pitcher Kelly Whitley recorded the victory striking out six and walking one. With the win, Whitley improved her overall record to 6-2.
In the fifth inning, Chelsea scored three runs with a two-out rally. Senior Brogan Darwin started things off with a walk. Senior Lizzy Bentley followed with a single, putting runners at first and third base. Senior Rachel Voicechovski brought Darwin home with an RBI single. Whitley, helping her own cause in the circle, plated Bentley and Voicechovski with an RBI double.
The Maples scratched out a run in the sixth inning for the game's final margin.
In the nightcap, Voicechovski paced Chelsea with two hits and an RBI.
Last Thursday, the visiting Bulldogs swept a doubleheader from county rival Dexter winning 2-0, 8-0.
In Game 1, Whitley picked up the win tossing all seven innings, allowing three hits, fanning nine and walking one.
"She pitched really well," said Chelsea coach Robin Raymond. "She had good control of her pitches."
At the plate, Darwin led the way with two hits and one RBI.
Sophomore Shelby Platt added two hits, while senior Casey Keilman had one hit for the Bulldogs.
Chelsea scored single runs in the second and third innings for the contest's ending tally.
In the second game, senior Karah Schanz recorded the win from the circle for the Bulldogs throwing a two-hitter, with 10 strikeouts and two walks.
Darwin sparked the Chelsea attack going 4-for-4 with three doubles, one triple and two RBIs.
Platt chipped in two hits and one RBI, while senior Annie Hollandsworth had a double and one RBI, junior Stevie Gregory a double and one RBI and Keilman one base hit for the Bulldogs.
Chelsea scored two runs in the first inning, followed by a run in the third inning, four runs in the fourth frame and one run in the seventh inning.
"It was a nice pitching performance in both games," Raymond said. "In the second game our bats came alive."
The Bulldogs next host Ann Arbor Pioneer Thursday at 4 p.m.
On Saturday, Chelsea hosts a round robin tournament with Clinton and Milan at 10 a.m.
On Monday, the Bulldogs travel to Tecumseh for a game at 4 p.m. The Indians, ranked No. 2 in Division 2, are the defending state champions.
On May 15, Chelsea visits Temperance Bedford for a contest at 4 p.m.
