Bulldogs first at Mason meet

Chelsea's boys' track and field team finished first at last Friday's Mason Invitational. The Bulldogs ended up with 150 points to capture the eight-team meet.

"Once again, our running events, especially sprints and hurdles, led the charge to victory," said Chelsea coach Eric Swager. "Our 150 points is the most we have ever scored at this meet."
Evan Carpenter finished first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.7 for Chelsea. Justin McGrath was third in 15.3, while Brad Ratliff was fifth in 16.5.
Carpenter broke the tape first in the 300-meter hurdles with a clocking of 46.1. Justin McGrath was second in 43.2, while Brad Ratliff was eighth in 45.6.
In field events, Mike Roberts finished fourth in the high jump with a height of 6-feet, 1-inch. Greg Rebudela was sixth with a mark of 5-8.
Tyler Ball ended up fifth in the shot put for the Bulldogs with a heave of 43-11. In the discus, he was seventh with a toss of 117-7.
Danny Ngo placed second in the long jump with a leap of 19-7. Antwan McClendon was fourth with a 19-1, while Troy Holdreith was eighth with a 17-2.
Ngo finished second in the 100 meters with a time of 11.5. Jason Ratliff ended up fourth in 11.6.
Jason Ratliff was fifth in the 200 meters in 24.5 to lead Chelsea.
Kevin Rosentreter crossed the line second in the 400-meter run with a clocking of 53.4. McClendon was fourth in 54.2.
Brendan Smith finished second in the 800-meter run in 2:04. Riley Feeney was seventh in 2:13 for the Bulldogs.
Smith was second in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:38. Feeney was seventh in 4:53, while Nick Hewitt was eighth in 4:54.
The Chelsea foursome of Brad Ratliff, Jason Ratliff, Nick Hill and Ngo placed third in the 400-meter relay with a clocking of 45.1.
The 800-meter relay group of Jason Ratliff, Ngo, Carpenter and McClendon finished first in a season-best 1:32.8.
In the 1,600-meter relay, the Chelsea quartet of Carpenter, Smith, McClendon and Rosentreter placed first in a season-best 3:30.1.
Nick Hall, Hewitt, Feeney and Smith finished third in the 3,200-meter relay in 8:45.7.
On April 24, visiting Chelsea beat county rival Dexter 71-66 in a dual meet.
"For the fifth straight year we had an extremely close meet with the Dreadnaughts," said Swager. "I told the athletes beforehand that it would come down to several key head-to-head match-ups, and it did. They (Dexter) were dominant in the distances and pole vault. Our hurdlers and throwers stepped up and scored big as we needed them to."
In field events, Ngo finished first with a distance of 20-0. McClendon was second with a 19-9.
In the discus, Ball was first with a toss of 123-9, while he was also first in the shot put with a throw of 44-0. Mark Bowdish was second in the discus with a 115-2, while Sam Birgey was third in the discus with a 109.4. Sam Dyer was third in the shot put with a heave of 42-9 for the Bulldogs.
Rebudela was second in the high jump with a 6-0.
Carpenter finished first in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.6. Justin McGrath was second in 15.7, while Brad Ratliff was third in 16.9.
Carpenter was third in the 300-meter hurdles in 42.2. Justin McGrath was second in 43.0, while Brad Ratliff was third in 44.3.
Jason Ratliff was first in the 100 meters in 11.2. Hill was third in 11.6.
Ngo broke the tape first in the 200 meters with a time of 23.05.
Smith finished first in the 400-meter run in a lifetime best 51.6. He was third in the 800-meter run in 2:02.
The Bulldog group of Jason Ratliff, Hill, Ngo and Carpenter placed first in the 400-meter relay in 44.6.
Jason Ratliff, Rosentreter, Ngo and Carpenter finished first in the 800-meter relay in 1:32.9. The time was the fastest for a Chelsea foursome in more than six years.
"Overall, I am thrilled at the way that all our team both competed and supported each other," Swager said. "I also would like to compliment our coaching staff for having athletes sharp this early in the season."
Chelsea next travels to Ypsilanti Saturday to compete in the Golden Triangle meet at 10 a.m.
On Wednesday, the Bulldogs visit to Saline to participate in the Southeastern Conference Jamboree at 1 p.m.
