Bulldogs capture Mason Invitational

Chelsea's girls' track and field team placed first overall at last Friday's Mason Invitational. The Bulldogs captured the eight-team meet with 123 points.

"We obviously had a tremendous meet," said Chelsea coach Pat Clarke. "Our resident coaching elder Bert Kruse said it was 1992 when the girls last won the Mason Invitational. This was quite an accomplishment for our young team. They continue to grow and improve with every meet."
In field events, freshman Christina Coffman finished first in the long jump with a season-best leap of 15-feet, 8 inches.
Jillian Fischer was second in the discus with a personal best toss of 107-4. Kelly Anderson was third with a 105-5.
Fischer was third in the shot put with a throw of 31-4, while Anderson was eighth with a 30-4.
Junior Cassie Coffman placed third in the pole vault clearing a personal best 8-6.
Sara Myers ended up eighth in the high jump with a mark of 4-4.
Sophomore Erin Benjamin finished second in the 100 meters with a time of 13.3. She was also second in the 200 meters in 27.4. Freshman Olivia DeTroyer was third in 28.0.
DeTroyer was first in the 400-meter run in a personal best 1:00.8. Kimmie Zimmerman was fifth in 1:04.6.
Amanda McKenzie finished sixth in the 800-meter run in 2:30. Cassie Coffman was eighth in 2:36.
McKenzie broke the tape first in the 1,600-meter run with a clocking of 5:23.4. Nicole Bougher was fifth in 5:48.2.
"Amanda McKenzie took time out of her busy soccer schedule to help us out at Mason," Clarke said of his senior, who's also a standout on the Bulldog soccer team. "After having played a very demanding game of soccer the night before, Amanda won the 1,600-meter run. She also anchored the medal-winning 3,200-meter relay and placed sixth in the 800-meter run. It was quite an impressive performance."
In the 3,200-meter run, freshman Julie Beaumont was sixth in a personal best 12:48. Katelyn Ciaccio was seventh in 12:58, while freshman Jessica Farley was eighth in a personal best 13:13.
The Chelsea foursome of Cassie Coffman, Zimmerman, DeTroyer and Benjamin finished first in the 1,600-meter relay in a meet record 4:10.65.
In the 800-meter relay, Christina Coffman, DeTroyer, Zimmerman and Benjamin ended up second in 1:51.6.
Cassie Coffman, Bougher, Beaumont and McKenzie placed third in the 3,200-meter relay in 10:24.5.
Nikki Oberholtzer, Katrina Williams, Victoria Kingsinger and Jessica Brown crossed the line eighth in the 400-meter relay in 56.2.
"I hope that the improvement continues for this team," Clarke said. "If it does, the season holds great promise."
On April 24, visiting Chelsea lost to county rival Dexter 70-66 in a dual meet.
"We came up a little bit short today in the scoring, but the girls' efforts were just great," Clarke said. "All of our distance runners ran PRs (personal records), but Dexter's strength there was too much."
In field events, Katie Martin finished first in the high jump with a height of 4-6. Myers was third with a mark of 4-4.
Christina Coffman was second in the long jump with a 14-3. Zimmerman was third with a 13-11.
Fischer was first in the discus with a toss of 99-8. She also was first in the shot put with a personal best heave of 33-10. Anderson was second in the discus with a throw of 99-1 and second in the shot put with a mark of 30-10.
Williams finished third in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.9. She was third in the 300-meter hurdles in 54.5.
Benjamin broke the tape first in the 100 meters in 12.7. DeTroyer was second in 12.9, while Brown was third in 14.2.
Benjamin was first in the 200 meters in 26.4, while DeTroyer was second in 27.0.
DeTroyer bested the field in the 400-meter run finishing first in 1:00.5.
Cassie Coffman ended up third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:33.7.
Beaumont placed third in the 3,200-meter run in 12:47.
Cassie Coffman, Christina Coffman, Benjamin and Zimmerman finished first in the 1,600-meter relay in 4:22.4.
Christina Coffman, DeTroyer, Zimmerman and Benjmain placed first in the 800-meter relay with a clocking of 1:53.2.
Oberholtzer, Williams, Kingsinger and Brown ended up first in the 400-meter relay in 56.5.
Chelsea next travels to Saline to participate in the Southeastern Conference Jamboree at 1 p.m.
