St. Louis Center hosts 24th annual recognition dinner
PUBLISHED: May 3, 2007
Sunday April 22, 2007 was a great day for the residents of St. Louis Center, as the residential care facility west of Chelsea was able to give something back to those who have done so much to aid in their continued support. Managed by the Servants of Charity Order of the Catholic Church, St. Louis Center has been serving children and adults with developmental disabilities since 1960, and Sunday was their 24th Annual Recognition Dinner. With the theme of "Everyone's a Star", residents wore their Sunday best to the event, with several sporting top hats.

The day's events began with a Mass held in the gym that included residents, guests, honoree Fr. Carl Simon of St. Joseph's Shrine, and two visiting Servants of Charity priests from Italy and Mexico. Following Mass, appetizers and beverages were served as guests continued to arrive until the crowd swelled to 280 people for a dinner catered by Outback Steakhouse of Ann Arbor. Owner Kurt Kampf and his assistants served-up a wonderful grilled steak and chicken dinner for everyone in attendance; donating the entire meal as a charitable contribution to the Center.
After dinner the formal presentations took place, and Steve Daut, Finance Director, served as Master of Ceremonies. Three check presentations were made to St. Louis Center starting with Ed Barnard of the Manchester Knights of Columbus, followed by Frank Pignanelli of the Chelsea Knights of Columbus, and concluding with Ettore Paolucci and Mary Galasso of the Italian American Club of Livonia.
Next on the agenda were the award presentations from St. Louis Center to their honorees. The Citizenship Award was presented to Dick Eidswick and Don and Toni Walker of Arbor Partners Venture Capital of Ann Arbor, for their 12 years of support for the Golf & Glory Outing in June. The Good Shepherd Award was presented to Fr. Carl Simon of St. Joseph Shrine in the Irish Hills for encouraging his flock to support St. Louis Center throughout the year. The Friendship Award was presented to Knights of Columbus Irish Hills Council #6223 for their Christmas fundraiser and August golf outing supporting St. Louis Center. And finally, Sheila Fitzgibbons and Richard Ellison of Mason were honored as Volunteers of the Year, for their many years of contributions and the creation of a new event debuting on April 29, 2007, known as the "Blessing of the Bikes."
Awards were presented to distinguished employees and residents, as Marcus Hall was recognized with the Employee of the Year and the Parents Association awards. Longevity awards were given to Bradford Hall, Peggy Kruse, Don Newsted, Kathy Robles, and Mary Smith for 5 years of service; while Mike Wilson was recognized for 10 years of service, and Barbara Scheel-Ayers was recognized for 25 years of service to St. Louis Center.
The event concluded with dancing and entertainment provided by Jerry Martell of All Star DJ Services, and a raffle drawing in which Joseph Saksewski of Ypsilanti won $250, Bill Lester of Jackson won $500, and Charles Mattoff of Naples Florida won $1,000. The annual event is sponsored by the St. Louis Center Parents Association.
