Locals excel on links and on oval

Chelsea and Dexter athletes were well represented on the links and the track during collegiate action last month.

At Oakland University, Dexter's Frank McAuliffe shot a season-low three under par 69 at the Summit League Championship last week in Macomb, Ill. The sophomore standout earned first-team All-Summit League with his performance. Overall, McAuliffe carded a two over par 218 (72-77-69) to place fourth overall individually. As a team, the Golden Grizzlies men's golf squad finished sixth with a 907 (303-311-293).
On April 8, Dexter senior and University of Michigan women's golf team co-captain Lindsay Davis tied for 40th with a 233 (79-80-74) at the Indiana Invitational at the Indiana University Golf Course in Bloomington. As a team, the Wolverines placed seventh out of 15 squads with a 911 (308, 300, 303).
On April 20, Chelsea junior Courtney Aili led Eastern Michigan University's women's golf team to a seventh-place finish at the Lady Buckeye Invitational in Columbus, Ohio. Aili finished 25th individually with a 237 (78-81-78). The Eagles ended up shooting a 950 (312, 328, 310).
At the University of Toledo, Chelsea freshman Emily Hardcastle is a member of the Rockets' women's golf team. During the fall season, Hardcastle competed in three tournaments finishing with an 84.6 stroke average.
At Brown University, Chelsea senior Blythe Crane led the Bears' women's golf team with a 242 (82-81-79) at the Ivy League Championship at the Atlantic City Country Club in New Jersey last month. With her performance, Crane finished 25th overall individually. As a team, Brown was seventh with a 997 (327, 341, 329).
At Ferris State University, Dexter junior Meghan Hunter helped lead the Bulldogs' women's golf team to a second-place finish at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match in Arlington, Ohio April 20 through 21. Hunter placed fifth individually with a 230 (76-79-75). As a team, FSU, ranked No. 6 in the nation in Division II, ended up with a 927 (307, 313, 307). With her effort, Hunter earned third-team All-GLIAC honors.
On the track, Chelsea and Dexter had quite a presence at the Eastern Michigan University Invitational April 19.
In the women's 1,500-meter run, Dexter senior Jen Gunderson placed 14th for Hillsdale College with a time of 4:39.05. Also in the race was University of Michigan sophomore and Chelsea native Rachel Severin who finished 16th in 4:40.84 and Eastern Michigan University senior and Dexter resident Kalli Williams who ended up 28th in 4:49.81.
Also at EMU meet, Chelsea redshirt freshman Ian Girard placed eighth in the 1,500-meter run in 3:53.03 to pace Michigan State University, while U-M junior Dexter's Tony Nalli was 14th in the event in 3:57.34.
