Dawgs sweep Coldwater

Chelsea baseball swept host Coldwater 8-5, 8-5 in a doubleheader last Saturday.

In the opener, senior pitcher Dan Rhodes posted the victory tossing all seven innings, fanning two and walking one.
At the plate, senior Dan Augustine led the Bulldogs (7-1) finishing 3-for-4 with three doubles and four RBIs.
Also doubling in the game for Chelsea was senior Adam Connell and junior Jeff Adams.
Senior Chad Nielsen added a sacrifice fly for the Bulldogs.
In Game 2, senior Todd Elliott picked up the win from the hill throwing a four-hitter, striking out four and walking one. Elliott (2-0) gave up one earned run.
"He pitched a real solid game," said Chelsea coach Wayne Welton.
The Bulldogs scored three runs in the first inning, as senior Travis Amburgey had a sacrifice fly and Augustine a two-run RBI double.
In the second inning, Chelsea scored two more runs as Nielsen had a sacrifice fly and Connell a RBI double.
In the third, fourth and seventh innings, the Bulldogs scored one run each as senior Ben Bradburn, junior Donny Riedel and Augustine each had RBIs.
Last Thursday, host Chelsea defeated Temperance Bedford 5-4 in 10 innings. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was suspended because of darkness. The Bulldogs led 7-3 in the fifth inning before the contest was halted. It is still undetermined when the game will be rescheduled.
In the opener, Chelsea scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.
In the seventh inning, the Bulldogs trailed 4-1. Adams led off with a single, followed by a walk to Nielsen. Connell followed with a RBI double cutting the Mule lead to 4-2.
After Augustine walked, senior Zach Leszczynski stroked a two-run RBI single tying the contest at 4-4.
In the 10th inning, Connell doubled in Christopher Schmelz with the winning run.
Nielsen pitched the first eight innings before giving way to Augustine who closed out the game earning the win.
"Nielsen pitched well," Welton said. "He deserved a better fate."
In the suspended second game, Chelsea scored six runs in the second inning. Four runs came on four consecutive bunts. Adams and Nielsen executed successful squeeze bunts, while Elliott had a sacrifice bunt and Connell a base hit bunt.
"We used small ball to have a big, six-run inning," Welton said.
Augustine swatted a two-run RBI single to close out the inning.
The Bulldogs next host Tecumseh Thursday at 4 p.m.
On Saturday, Chelsea hosts its own invitational at 10 a.m.
On Monday, the Bulldogs travel to Adrian for a game at 4 p.m.
