Chelsea sets records

Chelsea's girls' track and field team placed third at the Hastings Invitational last Saturday.

The Bulldogs ended up with 58 points.
Winning the 13-team meet was Hudsonville with 77.5 points. Grand Haven was second with 75 points, while Three Rivers was fourth with 40 points and Grand Ledge fifth with 38 points.
"We just ran super," said Chelsea coach Pat Clarke. "Hudsonville and Grand Haven are two of the top girls' teams on the west side of the state. To run with them is truly an accomplishment at this point in the season. Almost every girl on the team recorded a season's best time or distance.
"I really didn't know what to expect going into such a large and talented field with such a young team. The girls performed like veterans and came away with just an amazing performance."
Jillian Fischer and Ashley Walker combined for a first place in the shot put relay for Chelsea. The twosome also finished second in the discus relay.
Cassie Coffman and Kiara Bates combined for a fifth-place finish in the pole vault.
Christina Coffman and Victoria Kingsinger teamed to place sixth in the long jump.
Jenny Squires recorded a 4-foot-4 high jump for the Bulldogs.
In the sprint medley relay, Katrina Williams, Christina Coffman, Olivia DeTroyer and Erin Benjamin finished first with a meet and school record time of 1:52.61.
Corinne Carpenter, Cassie Coffman, DeTroyer and Benjamin placed first in the 1,600-meter relay in a meet record 4:09.69.
Christina Coffman, DeTroyer, Carpenter and Benjamin broke the tape first in the 800-meter relay with a clocking of 1:48.7.
Julie Beaumont, Samantha Newbound, Courtney Maher and Katie Lindauer finished fifth in the 6,400-meter relay in 24:57.4.
Emily Cottrell, Jenna McGrath, Kingsinger and Williams ended up fifth in the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:13.7.
Cassie Coffman, Kingsinger, Beaumont and Newbound placed fifth in the distance medley relay in 14:26.7.
Williams, Cottrell, Kingsinger and Carpenter finished sixth in the 400-meter relay in 53.7.
Nichole Hopp, Newbound, Beaumont and Maher ended up seventh in the 3,200-meter relay with a time of 11:19.1.
"We just had an amazing day and the girls deserve a great deal of credit for their improvement and hard work," Clarke said. "We must, however, continue this improvement if we want to meet our season's goals."
On April 15, visiting Chelsea defeated Adrian 114-23 in a dual meet.
"We had a good first meet with a lot of young kids," Clarke said. "Jillian Fischer and Katrina Williams each recorded two wins to lead us to the win."
Fischer placed first in the shot put with a heave of 34-1.5. She also was first in the discus with a personal best toss of 111-10.5.
Lauren Dark was first in the pole vault clearing 8-0. Cassie Coffman was second also with an 8-0.
"Lauren won the pole vault, but unfortunately broke her ankle in the hurdles and will be lost for the season," Clarke said.
Squires tied for first in the high jump with a personal best mark of 4-8.
Christina Coffman finished first in the long jump with a leap of 14-8. Kingsinger was third with a 13-7.5.
Williams was first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.8. Kingsinger was second in 18.3, while McGrath was third in 19.2.
Williams was first in the 300-meter hurdles in 53.6, while Kingsinger was second in 55.1 and Cottrell third in 56.3.
Benjamin broke the tape first in the 100 meters in 12.7, while Carpenter was second in 12.9.
Benjamin was first in the 200 meters in 26.8, while DeTroyer was second also in 26.8 and Christina Coffman third in 28.0.
DeTroyer was first in the 400-meter run in 1:03.3, while Christina Coffman was second in 1:09.8 and Meghan Smith third in 1:11.3.
Cassie Coffman was second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:47.9, while Hopp was third in 2:49.3.
Beaumont finished first in the 1,600-meter run in 6:06, while Maher was second in 6:14 and Squires third in 6:32.
Newbound was first in the 3,200-meter run in 12:46.4, while Beaumont was second in 13:25.3 and Maher third in 14:20.4.
McGrath, Williams, Carpenter and Kingsinger placed first in the 400-meter relay in 54.0.
Christina Coffman, DeTroyer, Carpenter and Benjamin placed first in the 800-meter relay in 1:47.6.
Cassie Coffman, DeTroyer, Benjamin and Carpenter finished first in the 1,600-meter relay in 4:33.
Cassie Coffman, Beaumont, Maher and Newbound crossed the line first in the 3,200-meter relay in 11:19.4.
"We must continue our improvement and eliminate mistakes if we are to continue to be successful," Clarke said.
Chelsea next travels to Mason to compete in its invitational Friday at 3:30 p.m.
