Chelsea reaches DeWitt final

Chelsea softball participated in the DeWitt Invitational last Saturday. The Bulldogs reached the tournament final before falling to St. Johns 4-3.

"I thought we played well in the tournament," said Chelsea coach Robin Raymond. "Our pitchers only walked four batters and we made only three errors in three games. I was pleased with our defense."
Against the Redwings, the Bulldogs (6-2-1) trailed 4-2 heading into the seventh inning. In the last frame, senior Brogan Darwin had an RBI double scoring sophomore Shelby Platt, who had singled earlier in the inning, for game's final margin.
Senior Kelly Whitley, though absorbing the loss, was impressive from the circle, tossing a two-hitter.
In Chelsea's second game of the tournament, the Bulldogs defeated the host Panthers 4-3.
Sophomore Kayley Dixon went the distance throwing a four-hitter, striking out six and walking one for the victory.
Chelsea took a 3-0 lead in the third inning, before DeWitt battled back to tie the game with three runs in the fourth frame.
With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Darwin ripped an RBI triple scoring senior Casey Keilman, who had singled earlier in the stanza, for the game-winning run.
In the tournament opener, the Bulldogs defeated Lansing Eastern 7-0.
Senior Karah Schanz was masterful from the circle, going the distance and striking out 14 for the win.
"Karah pitched very well to open the tournament for us," Raymond said.
Overall, Chelsea finished with 10 hits.
Senior Lizzy Bentley led the way for the Bulldogs with two hits and three RBIs. Darwin added two hits for Chelsea.
Last Thursday, the host Bulldogs swept a doubleheader from Ann Arbor Huron winning 1-0, 11-4.
In Game 1, Whitley picked up the win from the circle going the distance, allowing four hits, striking out six and walking none for the victory.
Getting the game-winning hit for Chelsea was Darwin who cranked a fence-clearing home run in the sixth inning.
"It was an excellent softball game," Raymond said. "It was a well-played game by both teams."
In the nightcap, the Bulldog bats came alive. Chelsea finished with 12 hits in the second game.
After three innings, the Bulldogs led 10-1.
In the fifth inning, Chelsea ended the scoring as Darwin belted another fence-clearing home run. The Central Michigan-bound recruit led the Bulldogs with three hits.
Senior Annie Hollandsworth, Bentley and Whitley each added two hits for Chelsea.
Junior Andrea Herrst, freshman Ellie Stoffer and Schanz each finished with one hit for the Bulldogs.
Dixon picked up the win from the rubber going the distance and fanning five.
"It was huge to get off to a good start in the league," Raymond said. "We hit very well in the second game."
Chelsea next hosts Saline Thursday at 4 p.m.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs host their own invitational at 9 a.m. Besides Chelsea, other teams participating in the tournament include Belleville, Canton, Holt, Lansing Catholic Central, Napoleon, Plymouth and Trenton.
On Monday, the Bulldogs travel to Ypsilanti Lincoln for a game at 4 p.m.
On May 1, Chelsea visits county rival Dexter for a contest at 4 p.m.
