Chelsea's girls' golf team opened its season finishing 10th at last Monday's East Lansing Invitational at Walnut Hills Country Club.

The Bulldogs ended up with a team score of 406. Twenty-one teams participated in the invite.
"We learned a lot about where we are and where we need to be," said Chelsea coach Andrea Bareis. "Our goal is to place in the top three at regionals and make it to the state finals as a team. This tournament helped us identify our strengths and weaknesses.
"Each girl knows where they need to be once regionals come around in mid-May and they are going to get there. We won't make it to states unless we work together as a team and that's what we plan on doing."
Leading Chelsea individually was senior Emily Hardcastle who tied for first overall in the tournament with an 81. Tying Hardcastle for the title was Mt. Pleasant's Leah Grawburg.
"Emily's match medalist performance of 81 proved early in the season that she is one of the area's best golfers in Division II," Bareis said. "Shooting an 81 in the extremely cold and windy conditions at a tough course like Walnut Hills sends an early statement that she is ready to play and compete among the state's elite golfers."
Bulldog sophomore Krystin Schwarze ended up with a 97, while sophomore Hannah Harwood added a 112 for Chelsea.
"Krystin Schwarze and Hannah Harwood will be relied upon heavily this year to provide consistent team scoring," Bareis said. "They learned a lot of valuable information from their first round of the season.
"Krystin learned how to grind out a respectable score even when certain parts of your game are not on track. Hannah learned that she can overcome anything even starting her round with a 14 on a hole. I'm very pleased with both of their performances and look forward to them scoring much better as the season progresses."
Rounding out the Bulldog scoring was senior Chrissy Burman with a 116 and senior Emma Chervinsky with a 123.
Chelsea next travels to Perry to participate in its invitational Saturday at 9 a.m.
On Wednesday, the Bulldogs host a Southeastern Conference quad 3 p.m. at Reddeman Farms Golf Course.
