Chelsea blanks Saline

By Don Richter, Sports Editor

Chelsea's girls' soccer team improved its overall record to 2-0 last Thursday with its 1-0 victory over host Saline (0-1-2).

The Bulldogs were on their heels in the first half, as the Hornets out-shot Chelsea 4-2.

"The defense did well to make sure that the Saline shots came from long distances," said Chelsea coach Chris Orlandi. "It's tough to beat goalkeeper Maggie Manville from long range."

Manville, who'll play at Eastern Michigan next season, made one save and notched her second shutout of the year.

The first half ended deadlocked at 0-0.

In the second half, Bulldog junior midfielder Emily Rabbitt scored the game-winner off an assist from senior midfielder Liz Gunden at 20:16 of the stanza.

"Rabbitt was able to carry the ball toward the Saline goal, get the ball on her right foot and slide a well-placed shot under a diving Saline keeper," Orlandi said of the game-winner.

For the game, Chelsea out-shot Saline 9-6.

Orlandi said junior defender Alison Beatty and Gunden played well for the Bulldogs.

"Alison did a tremendous job anchoring the middle of the Chelsea defense and Liz was outstanding playing a stopper role while Saline played three forwards in their attempt to increase pressure," Orlandi said. "I'm not sure if we wore Saline down or if we just started playing better late."

Orlandi said the Bulldogs are a confident bunch.

"Our team knows it can play with anyone and we do a good job of playing patiently, waiting for opportunities and capitalizing on them," he said. "This was a great team win."

Chelsea next travels to Ypsilanti Lincoln for a game Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

On Friday, the Bulldogs host Jackson County Parma Western at 5:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, Chelsea hosts Stockbridge at 5:30 p.m.

On April 26, the Bulldogs host county rival Dexter at 5:30 p.m. The meeting will be the first between the schools since the Dreadnaughts knocked Chelsea out of the state tournament last year with a 1-0 double overtime district final victory.

JV Soccer

Chelsea's JV girls' soccer team lost to host Saline 2-0 last Thursday.

After a scoreless first half, the Hornets tallied two unanswered goals in the second half to secure their victory.

"The girls played well and hopefully we can soon pick up our first victory," said Chelsea coach Matt Pedlow.

Playing well for the Bulldogs were keeper Megan Dunn and defenders Alexa Petoskey, Corey Block, Cayla Redmond and Lauren Johnson.

The Bulldogs next travel to Ypsilanti Lincoln for a game Thursday at 4 p.m.

On Friday, Chelsea hosts Jackson County Parma Western at 4 p.m.

On Tuesday, the Bulldogs host Stockbridge at 4 p.m.

On April 26, Chelsea hosts Dexter at 4 p.m.

Freshman Soccer

Chelsea's freshman girls' soccer team lost to host Saline 5-0 last Thursday. The Bulldogs played without subbing.

"The girls showed great improvement," said Chelsea coach Kirsten Smart. "Our defense really stepped up. No goals were scored in the second half.

"I am proud of the girls and I expect to see great things from the team in the future."

Chelsea next hosts Ann Arbor Huron Thursday at 4 p.m.

On Friday, the Bulldogs travel to Jackson for a game at 5 p.m.

On Monday, Chelsea visits Northville for a contest at 5:30 p.m.
