Whippets host free clinic

The Washtenaw Whippets field hockey team is recruiting players for their fall 2007 season. Girls who will attend Chelsea, Dexter, Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard or Manchester high schools next fall are eligible to play for the Whippets. Players new to the sport are welcome.

A mandatory parent/player organizational meeting will be held May 30 at 6 p.m. at the Washington Street Education Center (WESC - the old Chelsea high school). Registration packets and fees should be completed and turned in at this meeting.
This will be the fourth season for the Whippets. They will be fielding both varsity and JV teams to compete in the 2007 Michigan High School Field Hockey League season.
The Whippets were the 2006 Division III champions and will move up to Division II for the fall 2007 season.
Whippet players range from novice to very experienced players. Seven returning players are participating in the USFHA's 2007 Futures Development Program. Those players participating in the program include Corey Block, Kate Brown, Leah Cooperrider, Casey Fry, Johanna Grum, Amanda Jones and Vicky Moss. Corey Block was selected to play field hockey in the 2006 Junior Olympic Games.
Roxy Block and Leslie Fry are returning coaches for the Whippets. They will be joined one day a week by goalie coach Maureen Tesch-Kline, who was goalkeeper for the University of Michigan's NCAA championship team in 2001.
Pre-season practices for the Whippets will begin Aug. 13. Practices will be held Monday through Friday, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Chelsea. The regular season runs Aug. 27 through Oct. 22. The varsity team will participate in the state playoffs Oct. 24 through Nov. 6.

The Washtenaw Whippets field hockey team will provide free field hockey clinics to middle school and high school girls on April 21 from 10 a.m. to noon and May 12 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Pierce Lake Elementary School field on the corner of Old US 12 and Freer Road. No experience is necessary. Sticks and balls will be available to use.
