Scores for the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) exams were released to local school districts on Tuesday.
"We were up in some areas and down in others, but we're still ahead of state averages in all categories," said Andrew Ingall, Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the Chelsea School District.
The tests were given last fall to students in grades 3 through 9 in different subject areas.
Reading, writing, English language arts and math were tested in grades 3 through 8.
Science was added to the tests in grades 5 and 8; social studies was included on the sixth-grade tests.
Ninth-graders were tested in social studies only.
Chelsea third-graders beat state averages by 15 percent in writing; fourth grade, by 12 percent in writing; fifth-grade, 14 percent in math; sixth grade, 18 percent in math; seventh grade, 16 percent in reading; eighth grade, 13 percent in both math and science; and ninth graders scored a whopping 20 percent increase over state averages in social studies.
Parents won't have to wait long to post their child's grade on the refrigerator.
"We've got all the reports for individual students, and those will be going out in the mail to parents this week," Ingall said.
A more in-depth report on MEAP results will follow in next week's edition of The Chelsea Standard.
