The River Rats raced out to a 1-0 lead scoring on a blast into the left corner of the net at the 19-minute mark of the first half.
Four minutes later, the Bulldogs (1-0) answered as Leah Morrison kicked in a rebound tying the game at 1-1. Assisting on the play for Chelsea was Emily Rabbitt.
The teams entered the break deadlocked at 1-1.
"At halftime we talked about playing a strong team game," said Chelsea coach Chris Orlandi. "The individual players on the Huron squad were outstanding, but I thought we could beat them by defending and attacking together."
It didn't take long for Orlandi's vision to come true.
Two minutes into the second half, Sarah Reinhardt intercepted a slow River Rat pass and sprinted unabated toward the Huron net on a breakaway. The River Rat keeper made a nice stop on Reinhardt's shot, but the rebound went straight to Morrison who drilled the shot past the sprawled Huron goalie into the back of the net for the game-winner.
After Morrison's second goal, the Bulldogs went into a defensive mode type of play.
"Alison Beatty, Colleen Cottrell, Lee McLaughlin and Codie Barron were outstanding in the back," Orlandi said. "And Kaitlin Ehman, Liz Gunden and Cara Johnson were excellent in the midfield."
Earning the win in net for Chelsea was senior keeper Maggie Manville.
"As usual, Maggie had a spectacular game in net making nine saves and foiling numerous Huron chances," Orlandi said.
While Manville was strong in net, her teammates were also there to lend a hand or foot when needed.
"Ellen Stewart and Barron also had saves on Huron shots when Maggie was caught out of the net," Orlandi said. "We won this game because of great team play. It was an exciting start to our season."
