Williams, Amburgey named All-State

Chelsea seniors forward Schyler Williams and defenseman Travis Amburgey were each named first-team Division III All-State earlier this month.

With their selections, Williams and Amburgey bring the Bulldogs' number of first-team All-State players to an area-high six in the last four years.
Besides this year's twosome, former Chelsea icers chosen first-team All-State the past four years include Craig Irwin, Ryan Ford, Erik Cramer and Ryan Ruikka. Ruikka was not only named Division III first-team All-State, but was selected to the state's Dream Team last year.
"We've done very well in the last four years," said Chelsea coach Don Wright. "We've had a lot of success. I'm real proud of the guys."
This past season the Bulldogs finished 16-8-2 overall, losing in overtime to Dexter in the Division III state pre-regional final.
Chelsea this year was ranked in the state's top 10 for the fifth season in a row.
The Bulldogs cracked the state's top 10 despite playing one of the area's toughest schedules.
"Forty percent of our schedule was against top 10 teams (throughout all divisions)," Wright said. "Eighty-five percent of our games this season were against teams with a winning record."
Besides being named All-State, Williams was also selected Chelsea's MVP. The Bulldogs' all-time leading scorer, Williams finished his stellar career with 82 goals (first all-time) and 67 assists (second all-time) for 149 points (first all-time). His 149 career points shattered the old record by 24 points.
This season, Williams led Chelsea with 28 goals and 22 assists for 50 points. He had a plus/minus of plus-19. For his efforts he was named first-team All-Southeastern Conference.
"When he's on the ice, he's a force," Wright said of Williams. "Other teams had to deal with him. He's a force scoring and setting guys up. He has great speed and is a difference-maker."
Amburgey, also selected first-team All-SEC, was an offensive threat from the point this season for the Bulldogs finishing with 12 goals and 15 assists for 27 points. His 12 goals are the second-most for a defenseman in Chelsea hockey history.
Earning All-SEC honorable mention was Bulldog senior defenseman Jake Vaughan, senior forward David Maveal and junior forward Kyle George.
Vaughan ended up with six goals and 23 assists for 29 points. His 23 assists were a school record for a defenseman.
Maveal was second on the squad in scoring with 20 goals and 20 assists for 40 points. George finished with 12 goals and 13 assists for 25 points.
Howdy Holmes earned the SEC Sportsmanship Award. The senior forward ended the season with five goals and 15 assists for 20 points.
Junior forward Matt Heinen had five goals and 11 assists for 16 points, while senior forward Michael Bazydlo had six goals and seven assists for 13 points.
Bazydlo was further honored as a member of the Academic All-State team. He also received Chelsea's Hobey Baker Character Award.
As a squad, the Bulldogs earned Academic All-State accolades. The honor was the fourth in the last five years for Chelsea.
"In the program's seven years, we've been selected Academic All-State five times," Wright said.
