At the University of Michigan, Dexter's Jeff Marsh finished fifth in the 157-pound weight class at the Big Ten wrestling championships March 8 through 9 at the University of Minnesota's Williams Arena.

Marsh, a senior, advanced to the Big Ten semifinals before dropping an 8-5 decision to Penn State's Dan Vallimont. Michael Poeta from Illinois, who Marsh beat earlier this season, finished first overall defeating Vallimont 8-2 in the Big Ten final.

To open the tournament, Marsh beat Purdue's Nicholas Bertucci by a 12-2 major decision. In the Big Ten quarterfinals, Marsh beat Brandon Becker of Indiana 4-2.

In the wrestle-off portion of the 157-weight class, Marsh lost to Ohio State's Jason Johnstone 7-5. Johnstone ended up third overall. In the fifth-sixth-place bout, Marsh beat Minnesota's C.P. Schlatter by injury default.

With his performance, Marsh qualified for the NCAA Championships Thursday through Saturday in St. Louis. Marsh is one of six U-M wrestlers advancing to the finals.

As a team, the Wolverines placed third in the Big Ten with 97.5 points. Iowa was first with 127.50 points, while Minnesota was second with 112.50 points.

Chelsea junior Courtney Aili led Eastern Michigan University's women's golf team shooting a three-day 224 (73-75-76) at the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational in Rio Verde, Ariz. last Sunday. Overall, Aili finished 10th individually. As a team, the Eagles ended up fifth with a score of 909. Winning the 18-team tournament was Notre Dame with an 875 tally.

At Bethel College (Indiana), Dexter freshman pitcher Branden Paulun picked up his first win of his college career leading the Pilots to a 6-4 victory over St. Ambrose University (Nebraska) in a tournament in Lake Wales, Fla. earlier this month.

At Oakland University, Dexter sophomore Frank McAuliffe placed 66th overall with a three-day 241 (79-74-88) at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Invitational in Hilton Head, S.C. Feb. 26. As a team, the Golden Grizzlies men's golf team placed 13th with a 949 (320-310-319).

Also at Oakland, Chelsea junior Andy Kellogg helped lead the Golden Grizzlies to their ninth straight Summit League men's swimming and diving title Feb. 23. Kellogg finished first in the 100 freestyle in a career-best 44.99 and third in the 50 freestyle with a 20.76. He anchored the first-place 400 medley relay (3:13.54) and the 400 freestyle relay (2:58.16). He also was a member of the first-place finishing 200 freestyle relay (1:21.45).

At U-M, Dexter junior Hannah Smith and Chelsea freshman Jillian Drow helped spark the Wolverines' women's swimming and diving team to a second-place finish at the Big Ten Championships in Columbus, Ohio Feb. 23.

Michigan ended up with 609 points. Winning the Big Ten title was Minnesota with 660.5 points.

Individually, Smith placed third in the Big Ten in the 200 backstroke with an NCAA qualifying time of 1:56.94. She also finished fifth in the 50 freestyle in an NCAA time of 22.88.

In the 400 freestyle relay, Smith was a member of U-M's Big Ten meet record (3:17.47) and first-place finishing foursome. She also was part of the Wolverines' second place 200 freestyle relay (1:29.82) and second place 400 medley relay (3:36.07). All three relays qualified for the NCAA meet. The 400 medley relay time set a U-M record.

Drow placed 19th in the platform diving competition with a total of 200.95 points. She also was 40th in the one-meter event posting a score of 166.95 points.
