Chelsea hockey concluded an impressive year with its end-of-season banquet earlier this week.
The Bulldog finished 17-7-3 overall, losing to Allen Park 4-2 in the Division 3 regional final.
Named MVP for this year's squad was the trio of forwards senior Kyle George, junior Randy Cox and sophomore Drew Brown. The threesome made up one of the state's most explosive scoring lines. Between them, the group scored 91 goals this season.
George, who was named Division 3 first-team All-State, scored 27 goals and had 43 assists for 70 points this season. He also had a plus/minus of plus-43.
Cox, who earned Division 3 All-State second team accolades this past year, finished with 24 goals and a school record 45 assists for 69 points. His plus/minus was plus-40.
Brown, who received Division 3 All-State honorable mention recognition, ended the year with a school record 40 goals and 34 assists for a school record 74 points. His plus/minus was a school record plus-44.
"It's the first year we've ever had three players named MVP," said Chelsea coach Don Wright. "All three had great years. They wouldn't have had the type of year they did without each other."
Named Chelsea's Most Improved Player was defenseman Drew Dehring. The senior finished with one goal and 10 assists for 11 points this season. He had a plus/minus of plus-23.
Receiving the Rookie of the Year Award was Cox.
Earning the Brett Poupard Award for hustle and motivation was George.
Named first-team All-Southeastern Conference was senior defenseman Matt Prince, George, Cox and Brown. Prince finished with four goals and 17 assists for 21 points. He had a plus/minus of plus-16.
Receiving All-SEC honorable mention accolades was senior defenseman Andrew Korc and junior goaltender Joey Hume. Korc ended up with four goals and 20 assists for 24 points. He had a plus/minus of plus-28. Hume had a goals against average of .269 and an overall record of 11-7-2 this year.
As a team, Chelsea earned Academic All-State recognition for the fifth straight season and sixth out of the last seven years.
"It's one of our goals when we start the season," Wright said. "We want to do well in the classroom."
Individually, Prince was named Academic All-State.
Rounding out the individual scoring for the Bulldogs was senior forward Matt Heinen with 15 goals and 12 assists for 27 points. He had a plus/minus of plus-11. Junior forward Steven O'Keefe added five goals and 13 assists for 18 points, while senior forward Garrett Nickels had five goals and 10 assists for 15 points.
Junior forward Ulrich Linnet ended up with five goals and seven assists for 12 points, while junior forward Riley Feeney had three goals and eight assists for 11 points and sophomore forward Ethan Johnson two goals and three assists for five points.
Sophomore forward Dan Hudson finished with two goals and two assists for four points, while junior defenseman Trevor Mattson had three assists for three points. Mattson also had a plus/minus of plus-13.
Freshman forward Luke Heinen had one goal and one assist for two points, while freshman defenseman Shane Trojanowski had two assists for two points, junior defenseman Brian Manitz had one assist for one point and freshman defenseman Steve Lesko one assist for one point.
Chelsea's power play was one of the best in the area this past season. The Bulldogs scored 40 percent of the time with the man advantage. The 40 percent power play scoring average is a school record.
