Joan Elizabeth Pollard (Evans)

Ann Arbor

Joan Elizabeth Pollard (Evans) of Ann Arbor, loving mother, grandmother and wife passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on March 11, 2008.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Pollard, MD; her parents, Elizabeth and William Evans; and brothers, Arthur, Richard, Eric and Freddie.

She is survived by her sister and best friend Nora Holt; her children Robin (Ginger) Pollard, Alison (Joe Tinsley), and Philip (Lucy Malloy); her grandchildren, Stephanie, Elizabeth, Alexandra, Kathryn, Emma, Philip, Nicolle and Nicholas; and one great-granddaughter, Rylee.

Joan was born Feb. 24, 1921 in Bournemouth, England. Joan and John moved to the United States in 1957, eventually landing in Ann Arbor. After her husbandís death, Joan turned to her love of books, working first at Waldenbooks and then the original Borders for many years. She retired at the age of 72 and moved to Chelsea, Michigan. Joan was an extremely strong and resilient woman; she continued to enjoy life well into her senior years, including a weeklong hike on the southwest English coastal pathway when she was 65. She was an avid environmentalist, supporting Greenpeace, Nature Conservancy and other environmental causes. She spent many vacations with her family and grandchildren in England and Northern Michigan.

For the last five years of her life, Joan was lovingly cared for by her son, Philip, and Lucy at their home. The family would like to thank the staff at the Area Agency on Aging 1B for their wonderful support services over the years and the staff at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Hospice for their services over the last year.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Area Agency on Aging 1B, 3550 W. Liberty, Ann Arbor, MI.

An afternoon tea visitation was held at Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea on Friday, March 14, 2008.

Pauline "Peg" Jean Poertner

Formerly of Chelsea

Pauline "Peg" Jean Poertner of Ann Arbor passed away at the Arbor Hospice Residence in Ann Arbor on March 14, 2008. She was 81.

She was born the daughter of Roy H. and Cecelia (Gauthier) Steffens on Sept. 15, 1926 in Traverse City Mich. On Aug. 7, 1947 she married Maynard G. Poertner and he preceded her in death.

Peg was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church where she was also a member of the Altar Society. Peg was an avid bowler and became a life member of the Womanís International Bowling Congress, and past president of the Ann Arbor Bowling Association. She also was known to golf, softball and loved to fish at the family cottage up north. In her younger days she worked at the Chelsea Drug Store and also for Lyndon Color Labs.

Peg is survived by her children, Larry Poertner of Grass Lake, Karen (Ken) Reinhardt of Gregory, Jim (Lynda) Poertner of New Port Richey, FL, Pat (Skip) Hicks of Hazelgreen, AL, and Dale Poertner of Ann Arbor.

Also surviving are her grandchildren, Mike and Matt Steinaway, Crystal and Courtney Poertner; as well as great-grandchildren Kenny, Megean, and Taylor Steinaway; and one sister Dorothy (Frank) Gauthier.

A funeral mass was held Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at St. Mary Catholic Church. The Rev. Dr. William J. Turner officiated.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Arbor Hospice Foundation.

The family received friends at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home Monday and Tuesday.

John F. Heim

Chelsea

John F. Heim of Chelsea passed away at home on March 13, 2008. He was 41.

He was born the child of Roland and Freda (Hall) Heim on August 24, 1966 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. John was a graduate of Chelsea High school and known by his family and friends as a very hard worker that loved farming and always put the needs of others first before his own.

In addition to his parents, John is survived by his aunt Bernice (Robert Engel of Pinckney, uncle Austin (Betty) Hall of CO, Ray S. Hall of Coolville, OH and Fred E. Hall of WV.

John was preceded in death by his uncle Vincient Heim and his grandparents Louis and Ann Heim as well as Austin and Viola Hall.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 18 from the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, with the Rev Fr. David Harvey officiating.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to St Jude Childrenís Hospital or Boys Town. The family received friends at the funeral home on Monday

Alys Gale Tomshany

Dexter

Alys Gale Tomshany of Dexter died Monday, March 10, 2008 at Arbor Hospice. She was 82.

She is survived by her husband, Paul Tomshany Sr., and they were married for 62 years; sons Paul Tomshany Jr., (Tim) significant other Bunny Lockwood, Dan Tomshany, wife Coleen Tomshany, daughter Dee Tomshany, husband Ron Pettke; grandchildren Paul Tomshany III, wife Lisa Tomshany, Dan Tomshany II, wife Ranee Tomshany, Jason (Rachelle) Tomshany, Libby and Katie Tomshany, Scott Burby, wife Amanda Burby.

Also surviving are great-grandchildren, Tony Tomshany, Justin Tomshany, Caitlyn Tomshany, Jacob Tomshany, Makayla Stumbo, David Burby, and Joshua Burby.

Visitation was held at Hosmer-Muehlig Funeral Chapel in Dexter on Wednesday, March 12 and again on Thursday, March 13, 2008 at St. Andrews United Church of Christ in Dexter prior to service.
