The Purple Rose accepts potential actors' "head shot" photos and resumes throughout the year, according to Quintessa Gallinat, publicity and programs manager, but such open auditions take place only once a year.
"Everyone who wants to be in the season will be there," she said. "We will up every year and take a waiting list."
There are 150 total appointment slots for the April auditions.
According to Gallinat, they always fill up and will probably do so soon this year as well
PRTC Artistic Director Guy Sanville will view the auditions, which will consist of a one-minute comedic monologue.
Notifications and callbacks will be made by telephone.
Gallinat said one dozen or possibly two dozen hopefuls could be given roles in productions, depending on the cast size of any given show.
Information regarding available roles has not been finalized; specific production and schedule information will be made available at the audition.
"A lot of the roles are earmarked for our resident artists," Gallinat said. "It also depends (on) who gets called back for particular shows.
"That's a further narrowing of the process, and those who don't get cast for a show could work as understudies, who are required to be here a number of hours per week and would be required to perform if a cast member has an illness or otherwise can't perform."
The audition draws hopefuls from across the state, as well as Chicago and Toledo, with a large number coming from Washtenaw County and Chelsea, according to Gallinat.
The PRTC operates under an SPT (Small Professional Theater) Tier 7 contract with the Actors' Equity Association and employs both Equity and non-Equity actors. The current Equity salary is $385 per week.
Audition appointments are required and can be now by calling the PRTC Administration Office at (734) 433-PRTC (7782); office hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
