Readers of Corp! magazine selected the award-winning firms, which represent health care, banking, restaurants and several other business sectors.
The Chelsea-based companies selected were Aberdeen Bike & Fitness, Chelsea Community Hospital, Chelsea Eyeglass, the Common Grill, and the Garden Mill.
Those based elsewhere but having operations in the area include the Redstone Group, the village of Dexter's architectural consultant; Orchard, Hiltz & McCliment Inc. (OHM), the engineering firm for several municipalities in western Washtenaw County; Busch's in Dexter, Polly's Country Market, American 1 Federal Credit Union, Flagstar Bank, Key Bank and TCF Bank.
The honors come on the heels of Chelsea being named "Best Affordable Suburb in Michigan" and the McKune Memorial Library being named "Best Small Library in the Nation."
Each of the recipients was acknowledged at a ceremony in February.
"We're pleased to be recognized as one of the best health care businesses in the state," said Cindy Harrison, Vice President of Human Resources for the hospital.
"This award is a reflection of our hard-working staff and employees who strive to provide the highest quality service each day.
"It's very gratifying to know that many people recognize and appreciate these efforts."
Common Grill owner Craig Common said the award was a "very positive thing" for his restaurant.
"Any time you get a positive accolade, it's always good for business," he said.
"It feels great whenever you get mentioned in something like that; it's what you work hard for."
Irving Tabaka, owner of Chelsea Eyeglass, expressed a similar sentiment.
"It's something you always look for, people recognize you're doing your job," he said.
"We're going into our 25th year and that's always been our main thing, we've accomplished what we wanted to.
"Needless to say, we're tickled," Tabaka added. "I've been in this for 39 years, and it's a nice feeling that somebody appreciated what we were doing and brought it to somebody's attention."
Corp!, Michigan's largest business magazine, asked its readers to name which businesses they considered the "best" in Michigan.
Some 1,000 readers responded with their opinions and praise for businesses throughout the state.
The nearly 300 companies that were named a "Best of Michigan Business" were featured in the January/February 2008 issue of the magazine.
Corp! provides business features, news and profiles with a Michigan emphasis for business owners and executives.
Founded in 1998, the magazine has been under new ownership since editor-in-chief Edward Deeb and publisher Jennifer Kluge purchased Corp! and began publishing in March 2006.
