Chelsea's boys' basketball team captured a Class B state district title defeating Carleton Airport 77-36 last Friday at Brooklyn Columbia Central.

The district crown is the Bulldogs' second in a row. Chelsea also has won three consecutive Southeastern Conference White Division championships.

"We were able to get off to a good start," said Chelsea coach Robin Raymond. "We forced a lot of turnovers with our full court defense. That set the tone for the rest of the game."

The Bulldogs (22-1) forced eight turnovers in the first quarter, jumping out to a 16-4 lead.

At halftime, Chelsea increased its advantage to a commanding 42-13.

Entering the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs led 62-29.

In the fourth frame, Chelsea outscored the Jets (8-12) 15-7 for the night's final margin.

"They relied on their inside game, so we tried to force a full court game and not allow them to set-up their half court offense," Raymond said. "We shot the ball well from the floor. The kids are looking for the extra pass and finding the open man."

Raymond emptied his bench early in the third quarter.

Senior forward Micah Hudson led the Bulldogs with 19 points, including three triples, six rebounds and three steals. Senior guard Adam Connell finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and two steals.

Senior guard Nate Schwarze added a double-double of 12 points and 10 assists, while sophomore center Michael Stratman (6-foot-6, 210 pounds) had 10 points, three rebounds and two blocked shots for Chelsea.

Junior forward Greg Rebudela (6-3) had six points, while senior forward Mike Sauers had five points and five assists and senior post player Benny Johnson three points for the Bulldogs.

Junior guard Elliot Marshall had two points and three assists, while sophomore Mike Roberts had two points for Chelsea.

The Bulldogs finished 31-of-53 from the field for 58 percent. The Jets ended up 16-of-47 for 34 percent.

Chelsea made eight three-pointers for the game.

At the foul line, the Bulldogs were 7-of-11 for 64 percent, while Airport was 3-of-8 for 38 percent.

Chelsea out-rebounded the Jets 29-22.

The Bulldogs forced 23 turnovers and had 13 steals. In contrast, Chelsea had only nine turnovers.

On March 7, the Bulldogs beat Erie-Mason 85-26 in the district semifinal at Brooklyn Columbia Central.

Chelsea raced out to a 28-5 first quarter lead.

At the break, the Bulldogs led 43-15.

Heading into the fourth quarter, Chelsea increased its lead to 66-22.

Despite the lopsided win, Raymond said his team remained focused throughout the contest.

"I was pleased that we kept our consistency up," he said. "There was no let up despite who was in the game. That says something about playing as a team. Our discipline was very good."

Thirteen different Chelsea players scored in the game, led by Nate Schwarze with 18 points and six assists. Schwarze was 7-of-9 from the field, including two three-pointers.

Marshall ended up with 12 points, including two triples, while Connell had 10 points and four assists and Rebudela eight points and two assists for the Bulldogs.

Stratman added six points and three rebounds, while junior guard Matt Schwarze had five points and four assists and Johnson four points.

Junior center Dean Roberts, junior guard Jeff Adams, sophomore forward Chris Morgan and sophomore forward Jake Mantel each netted two points for Chelsea.

The Bulldogs were 36-of-50 from the field for a season high 72 percent, while the Eagles (2-18) were 10-of-27 for 31 percent.

At the line, Chelsea finished 7-of-10 for 70 percent. Erie-Mason was 6-of-8 for 75 percent.

The Bulldogs controlled the boards out-rebounding the Eagles 25-10.

Chelsea forced 26 turnovers and had 16 steals. The Bulldogs committed five turnovers.

"We're getting a lot of contributions from a lot of different players," Raymond said.

Chelsea played Gibraltar Carlson in a Class B state regional semifinal at Milan after press deadline. If successful against the Marauders, who are led by 6-7, 260-pound senior center Patrick McLain, the Bulldogs would play the winner of Dearborn Heights Robichaud–Detroit Southwestern in the regional final 7 p.m. Friday at Milan.

The Class B state quarterfinals are March 20 at Ferndale.

JV Basketball

Chelsea's JV boys' basketball team concluded its regular season defeating county rival Dexter 58-46 March 2.

The visiting Bulldogs (10-10, 6-8 Southeastern Conference) trailed 10-8 after one quarter.

At halftime, Chelsea found itself down 24-17.

In the third quarter, the Bulldogs exploded for 19 points, while limiting the Dreadnaughts to eight points, taking a 43-33 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Chelsea outscored Dexter 22-14 for the game's final margin.

Jake Mantel led the Bulldogs with 24 points.

Mike Roberts added 15 points, while Alex Keely had nine points and Mike Cooper five points for Chelsea.

On Feb. 27, the host Bulldogs defeated Ypsilanti Lincoln 52-39.

Roberts led Chelsea with 16 points.

Chris Morgan chipped in 12 points, while Mantel had 11 points for the Bulldogs.

Chelsea raced out to a 12-3 first quarter lead.

At the break, the Railsplitters closed the gap to 17-15.

Heading into the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs led 28-24.

In the fourth quarter, Chelsea outscored Lincoln 24-15 for the night's ending margin.

Mike Goedert, Tyler Fischhaber, Mike Lenneman, Brett Everding, Dakota Risner, Travis Johnson, Matt McCalla, Keely, Morgan, Mantel, Cooper and Roberts teamed up for a successful season this year.

"They all did a great job this year and were an outstanding group of young men," said Chelsea coach Mark Scheese.
