The Bulldogs won back-to-back district titles for the first time in school history.
Last Friday, host Chelsea defeated Fowlerville 25-22, 25-19, 22-25, 15-9 in the district final.
"This match was a re-match of the district final from last year where we beat Fowlerville in three games," said Chelsea coach Laura Cleveland. "Both teams have a majority of their players as seniors, so it was going to be a tough match coming in. Fowlerville has been ranked as high as seventh in Class B this season and we both ended the season as honorable mention Class B going into the district."
Cleveland said Chelsea started the final match well.
"The team looked really sharp and executed well and took control of the match in games one and two," she said. "In games three and four, our serve receive was not as efficient as in previous games. We were not attacking as effectively as we had in games one and two."
In the deciding game five, the Bulldogs regrouped and played their best.
"In game five we came out and executed in all phases of the game," Cleveland said. "Our serving was very effective and we were able to go out to an 8-1 lead. We were able to keep siding out for the win in the match."
Cleveland said she was pleased with her squad's effort and poise against the Gladiators.
"I was very proud of the way the girls kept their composure in the match after having a commanding 2-0 lead," she said. "They were focused and made the plays when they needed to."
Also last Friday, Chelsea beat Onsted in the district semifinals 25-10, 25-13, 25-16.
To begin district play, the Bulldogs defeated Brooklyn Columbia Central 25-20, 25-23, 25-20 Feb. 28.
Senior middle blocker Ann Kendzicky (5-foot-11) led Chelsea with 38 kills.
Senior outside hitter Paige Denison (5-8) added 28 kills, while senior outside hitter Hannah Osbeck (5-6) had seven aces.
Senior setter Katie MacFarlan (5-5) finished with 89 assists for the Bulldogs.
Chelsea next travels to Eaton Rapids to face Coldwater in a Class B state regional semifinal Saturday at 10 a.m.
Haslett faces Lake Odessa Lakewood in the region's other semifinal Saturday.
