Her wider family circle embraces friends beyond number in the Marywood, Aquinas College, Silver Maples, St. Thomas the Apostle and St. Mary's Parish communities. Her other much-loved "children" include countless graduates of St. Thomas the Apostle Elementary School who were blessed by her doting and devoted tutelage over a life-long career as a passionate educator of extraordinary talent and lasting impact. Ever a student herself in a rich lifetime devoted to scholarship at every level, Mrs. Marin's intellectual sisterhood of fellow literary, art and Biblical scholars included the late Dorothy Clingman, Marcia Clapp, Mary Beth Hansknecht and surviving friends Betty Dinkel, Sr. Aquinas Weber, OP and Marilyn Martin. Her formal education began with the Dominican Sisters at Marywood Academy, Aquinas College and the University of California at Berkeley. Mildred's dinner table, graced by the likes of life-long friends George Lamountain, Fr. Charles Banet, Charley and Marcia Clapp, Lew and Dorothy Clingman, Bill and Marianne Graff, and more recently Gerane and Gabi Weinrich, was a scintillating soiree of incredible intellectual (and occasionally culinary) excitement of the first magnitude. Her love of learning and curiosity fueled by her life-long friends was passed along to her birth children and students alike with a generosity of spirit and zeal consistent with the masterful educator she was. Her lifelong faith pilgrimage included special devotion to Solanus Casey, Mother Teresa of Calcutta and Saint Therese of Lisieux, the Little Flower of Jesus. Her connection to the people of St. Thomas parish was established early and never faltered over the ensuing fifty years. She will be missed by all whose lives she touched and so graciously blessed.
Her family hosted a family Rosary on March 7 at the O'Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Funeral Home, 3980 Cascade Road SE. The funeral Mass will be celebrated this morning, Thursday, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1449 Wilcox Park Dr. SE at 10:30 a.m. with visitation one hour prior at the church.
