Last Saturday in Charlotte, Cooley (47-4) reached the regional final at 135 pounds before losing 4-1 to Mason junior Craig Eifert (54-1). With his finish, Cooley qualified for the state meet. To advance to the state final, a wrestler had to place in the top in his weight class at the regional.
"I think he (Cooley) can have a better match against him (Eifert)," said Chelsea coach Kerry Kargel. "Eifert beat him at districts 10-4 or something, so I think we're closing the gap a little bit."
To begin the regional, Cooley beat Richland Gull Lake senior Wally Shaver (47-3) on a 13-3 major decision.
In the regional semifinal, Cooley defeated sophomore Trevor Schnepp (40-16) of Eaton Rapids 3-2.
Schnepp beat sophomore Tyler Humes of Stevensville-Lakeshore (40-13) by default in the regional third-fourth-place match.
Cooley will be making his second trip to the state finals this year.
"Dakota wrestled well on Saturday," Kargel said. "We're hoping for good things at state. This year he'll have more confidence in himself. I think he's capable of medalling (top eight at state meet)."
Also competing in the regional meet for the Bulldogs was Glen Cobb in the 119-pound weight class. The junior lost 4-1 to Zach Huff of Sturgis in his opening match.
In his second bout, Cobb lost to Justin Garza of Eaton Rapids 2-1.
At 171, junior Kevin Rosentreter lost by pin in 5:54 to Tim Newman of Stevensville-Lakeshore in his opening match.
"The match was close all the way through," Kargel said.
In his second battle, Rosentreter lost 2-1 to Hunter Feraco of Richland Gull Lake.
Prices for the state finals are $10 for a single session reserved ticket, while single session general admission is $9.
