Chelsea ices Catholic Central

Chelsea hockey defeated host Lansing Catholic Central 6-3 in its regular season finale last Thursday.

"We dominated play, it wasn't that close," said Chelsea coach Don Wright. "We had more speed. WE were able to create turnovers and attack. We did a good job of creating shot opportunities in their zone."
The Cougars opened the scoring as Shawn Courtney recorded a power play goal at 4:32 of the first period.
The Bulldogs (15-6-3) answered as senior Kyle George scored off an assist from senior Drew Dehring tying the game at 1-1.
In the second period, George notched his second goal of the night on the power play giving Chelsea a 2-1 advantage at 4:40 of the frame. Junior Randy Cox and sophomore Drew Brown picked up assists on the play for the Bulldogs.
Catholic Central responded as Kevin Clark scored at 5:57 of the second period knotting the contest at 2-2.
Less than a minute later, Brown gave Chelsea the lead for good scoring off an assist from linemates Cox and George for a 3-2 Bulldog lead.
At 12:03 of the second period, senior Matt Heinen scored unassisted for a 4-2 Chelsea margin.
With 12 seconds left in the second period, Brown scored for a 5-2 Bulldog lead. Senior Andy Korc and Cox recorded assists on the play for the Bulldogs.
In the third quarter, Cox scored as Brown and George assisted on the goal for Chelsea.
The Cougars' Frank Liesman scored at 12:47 of the third period for the night's ending tally.
The Bulldogs out-shot Catholic Central 49-9 for the game.
Picking up the win in net for Chelsea was junior goaltender Joey Hume.
On Feb. 20, the visiting Bulldogs tied Davison 5-5.
"We made some good adjustments after the first period to shut them down," Wright said. "It was a good game. To go into their place and get a tie, I felt good about it."
The Cardinals' Dylan Welch scored at 4:06 of the first period giving Davison a 1-0 lead.
Dehring tied the score at 1-1 at 6:46 of the first period with a goal assisted by Cox and Brown.
Dan Allard scored a power play goal at 12:33 of the first period giving the Cardinals a 2-1 advantage.
Welch scored his second goal of the game for a 3-1 Davison lead at 14:05 of the first period.
With 31 seconds left in the first period, Brown scored cutting the Cardinals' lead to 3-2. Cox and George recorded an assist on the play.
In the second period, Heinen scored tying the game at 3-3 with a goal at 4:56 of the frame. Senior Matt Prince and senior Garrett Nickels picked up an assist for Chelsea.
Ben Marango scored giving Davison the lead again at 4-3 with a goal at 8:31 of the second period.
In the third period, Welch scored his third goal of the night for a hat trick at 2:24 of the stanza increasing the Cardinals' lead to 5-3.
Brown scored unassisted at 9:11 of the third period closing the gap to 5-4.
With less than two minutes left in the game, Brown scored his third goal for a hat trick off an assist from George and Cox for the contest's final outcome.
The game went into overtime, but neither team was able to score.
Davison out-shot Chelsea 26-18.
Preserving the tie in net for the Bulldogs was sophomore Matt Darr.
"Even though we were down two goals in the third period, we stayed patient and opportunities happened," Wright said. "We were able to get two goals in the last six minutes."
Chelsea faced Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard in a pre-regional first round game after press deadline. If successful against the Gryphons, the Bulldogs would take on the winner of Dexter-Jackson Lumen Christi Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the pre-regional final at Chelsea's Arctic Coliseum.
