Bulldogs capture district crown

Chelsea's girls' basketball team captured a Class B district championship last week defeating Ida 54-50 last Friday. The Bulldogs also beat Erie Mason 54-23 in the district semifinals Feb. 20.

Against Erie Mason, the Bulldogs raced out to a 17-5 first quarter lead.
At the break, Chelsea increased its advantage to 29-12. Entering the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs continued leading 41-20.
In the fourth frame, Chelsea put the game away outscoring the Eagles 13-3 for the night's final margin.
Senior post player Nellie Daniels paced the Bulldogs with 11 points, three steals and one rebound.
Senior Emily Rabbitt added eight points, two rebounds, two assists and three steals, while senior Annie Hollandsworth had eight points and three steals for Chelsea.
Junior Erin Benjamin ended up with seven points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals, while junior Zoe Suffety had six points and three boards and junior Krystin Schwazre five points, four rebounds and two assists.
Junior Megan Dunn had four points, two rebounds and three assists, while senior Brogan Darwin had three points and two rebounds and senior Lizzy Bentley two points and three rebounds.
From the field, Chelsea finished 23-of-50 for 46 percent. Erie Mason was 6-of-25 for 24 percent.
At the free throw line, the Bulldogs ended up 7-of-13 for 54 percent. The Eagles were 11-of-16 for 70 percent.
Chelsea dominated the paint area, scoring 40 points, while holding Erie Mason to 12 points down low.
The Bulldogs' bench outscored the Eagles reserves 23-0.
In the district final, Chelsea led 14-13 after one quarter.
At halftime, the Bulldogs increased their lead to 28-23. In the third quarter, the Bluestreaks rallied taking a 39-38 advantage into the fourth frame.
In the fourth quarter, however, Chelsea dug down deep, outscoring Ida 16-11 for the district title.
Schwarze led the Bulldogs with 17 points and two rebounds.
Darwin added a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Hollandsworth had nine points and two boards.
Rabbitt chipped in seven points, three rebounds and two assists, while Benjamin had four points, eight assists and four steals and Bentley two points.
Chelsea finished 19-of-45 for 42 percent from the field. The Bluestreaks were 19-of-41 for 46 percent. The Bulldogs were 7-of-13 from beyond the arc for a sizzling 54 percent. Ida was 1-of-5 from three-point land for 20 percent.
At the line, Chelsea was 9-of-16 for 56 percent, while Ida was 11-of-18 for 61 percent.
The Bluestreaks out-rebounded the Bulldogs 30-20, including 13-8 on the offensive glass.
Chelsea forced 22 turnovers and had 11 steals.
The Bulldogs' district crown was its second straight and fourth in the last eight years.
Chelsea faced Dearborn Divine Child last Tuesday in a regional semifinal after press deadline. If successful against the Falcons, the Bulldogs would play the winner of Detroit Community-Riverview Thursday at 7 p.m. at Chelsea in the regional final.
