The Bulldogs (9-9, 7-7 Southeastern Conference White Division) ran into a hot Maple ball club last week. Entering the contest, Adrian had won five out of its last five games, losing only to Ann Arbor Huron and No. 2-ranked Ann Arbor Pioneer.
"Adrian played really well," said Chelsea coach Robin Raymond. "We came out and played well."
The Bulldogs opened the game taking an 11-7 first quarter lead.
At halftime, the Maples rallied to tie the game at 22-22.
In the third quarter, Adrian outscored Chelsea 13-9, taking a 35-31 advantage into the fourth frame.
In the fourth quarter, the Maples scored 14 points, while limiting the Bulldogs to nine points for the game's final margin.
"We couldn't get closer than five or six points," Raymond said. "We had good looks at the basket, but the ball wouldn't drop for us. We were working hard and trying to make plays."
Senior guard Elliot Marshall led Chelsea with 11 points, including two triples, and two assists.
Senior forward Greg Rebuldela added seven points, while senior guard Matt Schwarze had six points, three rebounds and two assists and senior forward Stu Mann six points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs.
Junior forward Jake Mantel and sophomore forward Tyler Zegarzewski each had four points and five rebounds, while junior guard Michael Roberts had two points and three assists for Chelsea.
From the floor, the Bulldogs finished 16-of-44 for 36 percent. The Maples ended up 19-of-36 for 53 percent.
At the free throw line, Chelsea was 4-of-8 for 50 percent, while Adrian was 5-of-7 for 71 percent.
On the boards, the Bulldogs out-rebounded the Maples 30-25, including 6-4 on the offensive glass.
On Feb. 12, visiting Chelsea lost to Saline 53-47. With the win, the Hornets increased their win streak to six straight.
The Bulldogs started out strong, taking a 14-11 first quarter lead.
In the second quarter, Saline exploded for 20 points, while holding Chelsea to four points taking a 31-18 halftime advantage.
"In the last two minutes of the second quarter, Saline outscored us 6-0," Raymond said.
In the third quarter, the Bulldogs rallied closing the gap to 38-31 heading into the fourth frame.
"We played really well in the third quarter," Raymond said. "We played better on defense and had more energy."
In the fourth quarter, Chelsea outscored the Hornets 16-15 for the night's ending tally.
"We got it (Saline lead) down to four points in the fourth quarter," Raymond said. "We couldn't get over the hump."
Raymond said the key to Saline's victory was its play on defense.
"They put a lot of pressure on the perimeter," he said. "They pushed our offense to the outside. The basket had a lid on it. We were unable to convert easy baskets. We couldn't put the ball in the hole when we needed to."
Mantel led the Bulldogs with 18 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Marshall finished with 11 points, while Schwarze and Zegarzewski each added five points. Rebuldela and Roberts each ended up with four points for Chelsea.
From the field, the Bulldogs were 17-of-49 for 35 percent. The Hornets were 21-of-42 for 50 percent.
At the foul line, Chelsea was 11-of-18 for 61 percent. Saline was 7-of-12 for 58 percent.
The Hornets out-rebounded the Bulldogs 29-26 for the contest.
