Bulldogs combine with Indians for victory

Chelsea's boys' swimming and diving team traveled to Battle Creek Lakeview last Saturday to participate in a unique meet. The Bulldogs combined with Tecumseh, while the host Spartans teamed with St. Joseph in an East versus West type of invitational.

The East prevailed 289-247.
"That was a really fun meet to be a part of," said Chelsea assistant coach Brian Thomas. "Combining our team with Tecumseh resulted in some incredibly fast swims."
In the 200 medley relay, Chelsea senior Nick Armstrong teamed with three Tecumseh swimmers to finish first with a pool record time of 1:41.02.
In the 200 freestyle, Bulldog senior Rick Kinsey touched first in 1:51.41. Senior James Bassett was eighth in 2:07.20, while sophomore Ryan Wrathall was ninth in 2:07.58.
Chelsea sophomore Dominic Conybeare finished sixth in 200 individual medley with a clocking of 2:20.02. Junior Nick Dyerly was eighth in 2:29.28, while freshman Viran Rana was 12th in 2:31.50.
Armstrong placed first in the 50 freestyle in 22.94. Senior Jake Policht was eighth in 24.58, while senior Brett Kruse was 10th in 24.85.
In the one-meter diving competition, Chelsea freshman Michael Heydlauff finished third with 273.05 points. Peter Wilke was seventh with 226.20 points, while Landon Niesen was ninth with 180.30 points.
Armstrong ended up fifth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.49. Senior Jordan Skidmore was seventh in 1:00.06, while Rana was 10th in 1:10.87.
Brett Kruse finished sixth in the 100 freestyle in 55.00, while freshman Evan Phillips was ninth in 58.20 and Wrathall 10th in 58.61.
Rick Kinsey placed first in the 500 freestyle in 5:07.96. Bassett was eighth in 5:38.90.
In the 200 freestyle relay, Rick Kinsey and Armstrong combined with Tecumseh swimmers to finish first in 1:31.73.
Skidmore was second in the 100 backstroke in 57.83. Conybeare was sixth in 1:02.73 and Todd Kruse 10th in 1:08.62.
Policht ended up eighth in the 100 breaststroke with a clocking of 1:16.20. Junior Michael Kozma was ninth in 1:17.72, while Pete Kinsey was 11th in 1:21.31.
In the 400 freestyle relay, Rick Kinsey teamed with three Tecumseh swimmers to finish first in 3:28.01.
Last Friday, visiting Chelsea lost to Ann Arbor Pioneer 134-52.
In the 200 medley relay, the Bulldog quartet of Rick Kinsey, Conybeare, Skidmore and Armstrong placed second in 1:52.86.
Phillips finished fifth in the 200 freestyle in 2:08.82. Bassett was sixth in 2:09.61, while Wrathall was seventh in 2:10.38.
Conybeare was third in the 200 individual medley in 2:20.93. Dyerly ended up sixth in 2:31.43, while Todd Kruse was seventh in 2:36.57.
Armstrong bested the field in the 50 freestyle in 23.34. Brett Kruse was sixth in 24.91, while senior Doug Lance was seventh in 27.28 and senior Mark Bowdish eighth in 28.08.
In the one-meter diving event, Heydlauff placed second with 161.95 points. Wilke was fourth with 148.20 points, while Nieson was sixth with 109.30 points.
Armstrong was second in the 100 butterfly with a clocking of 1:00.05. Rana was fourth in 1:01.57, while Kozma was seventh in 1:28.29.
Rick Kinsey touched first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.47. Phillips was fifth in 56.96, while Conybeare was sixth in 57.48.
In the 500 freestyle, Bassett was fourth in 5:39.05. Pete Kinsey ended up fifth in 6:16.78, while Deric Prieskorn was seventh in 6:46.00.
In the 200 freestyle, the Bulldog combo of Rick Kinsey, Brett Kruse, Armstrong and Skidmore finished second in 1:35.40.
Todd Kruse placed fourth in the 100 backstroke in 1:08.78. Brett Kruse was sixth in 1:13.05, while sophomore Jared Gentz was seventh in 1:22.50.
In the 100 breaststroke, Rick Kinsey was fourth in 1:12.18. Kozma was fifth in 1:16.87, while Policht was sixth in 1:18.66.
In the 400 freestyle relay, the Chelsea group of Skidmore, Phillips, Wrathall and Conybeare finished third in 3:45.39.
The Bulldogs next host county rival Dexter Friday at 6:30 p.m.
"We are always ready for a meet with Dexter," Thomas said. "We hope to pack the stands to watch these two teams compete."
On Feb. 16, Chelsea travels to Ypsilanti Lincoln for a meet at 6:30 p.m.
