Last Friday, the host Bulldogs (10-0, 5-0 Southeastern Conference), ranked No. 6 in Class B by the Associated Press and No. 10 in the Detroit News' Super 10, defeated league foe Tecumseh 63-41.
Chelsea coach Robin Raymond said the Bulldogs' work down low was an important factor in their victory.
"We did a good job rebounding," he said. "We only gave up six offensive rebounds. We were able to control the boards."
For the game, Chelsea out-rebounded the Indians 33-23, including 11-6 on the offensive glass.
To begin the contest, Tecumseh slowed the game down trailing only 5-4 after one quarter.
"Tecumseh came into the game with two wins in a row," Raymond said. "They worked hard all game. Defensively they played well. The first quarter was a half court game."
If the first quarter was a half court game, the second quarter was a full court sprint.
In the second quarter, Chelsea turned up the heat defensively and quickened the pace of the ballgame. At halftime, the Bulldogs opened up a 23-14 lead.
"We were able to get the ball and go," Raymond said of the second quarter turnaround. "We were able to run."
In the third quarter, the Indians were forced to press in an attempt to catch up.
"That gave us another opportunity to run," Raymond said. "We executed well in the third quarter."
Heading into the fourth quarter, Chelsea led 43-33.
In the fourth frame, the Bulldogs closed out the victory from the free throw line, canning 11-of-14 shots in the quarter. Chelsea outscored Tecumseh 20-8 in the fourth quarter for the night's final margin.
"They were trying to get back into the game," Raymond said of the Indians' foul troubles in the fourth quarter. "We did a good job of handling the ball. We had a season low six turnovers. That was exceptional."
Pacing Chelsea offensively was senior point guard Nate Schwarze (5-foot-11) with 15 points, three rebounds and a team-high seven assists. He also finished the game with zero turnovers.
Senior forward Micah Hudson (6-2) added a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. He also had four assists for the Bulldogs. Senior guard Adam Connell had nine points and three steals.
Junior guard Elliot Marshall ended up with eight points, including two three-pointers for Chelsea.
"He shot the ball well," Raymond said of Marshall. "He was 3-for-5 from the floor."
Junior forward Greg Rebudela (6-3) chipped in seven points and five rebounds, while sophomore center Mike Stratman (6-6, 210 pounds) had five points and three rebounds in his Bulldog varsity debut.
Junior post player Dean Roberts (6-3, 270) finished with three points and four boards, while senior forward Mike Sauers had two points and four rebounds and senior forward Benny Johnson two points for Chelsea.
The Bulldogs ended up 21-of-50 from the floor for 42 percent. The Indians were 17-of-39 from the field for 44 percent.
At the line, Chelsea was 17-of-23 for 74 percent. Tecumseh was 2-of-8 for 25 percent.
The Bulldogs forced 13 turnovers and had six steals.
Raymond said Chelsea's success this season has been a team accomplishment.
"We're getting good contributions from a lot of people," he said. "Our depth has really paid off."
