Bulldogs race to win over Indians

Chelsea's girls' basketball team couldn't have asked for a better beginning last Friday against host Tecumseh.

The Bulldogs (5-8, 5-4 Southeastern Conference) raced out to an 18-0 first quarter lead against the Indians, who are in first place, a half game ahead of Chelsea, in the SEC White Division.
"Tecumseh has a 6-4 record in the SEC White Division," said Chelsea coach Todd Blomquist. "We are two of those losses."
Chelsea has definitely had Tecumseh's number this season. Last Friday was no exception as the Bulldogs opened the game clicking on all cylinders.
In the second quarter, the Indians regrouped, outscoring Chelsea 12-6 and trimming the Bulldogs' lead to 24-12 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Chelsea regained control of the contest, outscoring the Indians 13-11, increasing its advantage to 37-23 heading into the fourth stanza.
In the fourth quarter, Tecumseh rallied, scoring 19 points, while holding the Bulldogs to 10 points, but it was too little, too late for the Indians.
Senior post player Brogan Darwin (6-foot) led Chelsea with 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Senior guard Annie Hollandsworth added 10 points, including two three-pointers, three steals and two assists, while junior guard Krystin Schwarze had nine points and two rebounds for the Bulldogs.
Senior forward Emily Rabbitt finished with seven points, a team-high five assists and two steals, while senior guard Lizzy Bentley had four points and two boards and junior guards Megan Dunn and Erin Benjamin each ended up with two points. Benjamin also hauled down four rebounds for Chelsea.
The Bulldogs shot well, finishing 19-of-36 from the field for 52 percent. In contrast, Tecumseh was 15-of-37 for 40 percent.
At the free throw line, Chelsea was 6-of-12 for 50 percent, while the Indians were 11-of-21 for 52 percent.
Tecumseh out-rebounded the Bulldogs 22-17, including 10-4 on the offensive glass.
On Jan. 15, host Chelsea defeated county rival Dexter 43-36.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 28-23 first half lead, including 14-7 after the first quarter.
In the second half, Chelsea outscored the Dreadnaughts 15-13 for the night's final margin.
Darwin paced the Bulldogs with 17 points, nine rebounds and six steals.
Rabbitt finished with 10 points and four rebounds, while Hollandsworth had nine points and three boards and Benjamin six points and three rebounds.
Dunn ended up with one point, two rebounds and two steals, while Schwarze had two assists and one steal.
Chelsea was strong from the free throw line against Dexter making 18-of-24 for a sizzling 75 percent. The Dreads were 4-of-10 for 40 percent.
The Bulldogs forced 24 turnovers and outscored Dexter in the paint 22-10.
On Jan. 14, visiting Chelsea lost to Ann Arbor Huron in a makeup game 50-41.
The River Rats led 28-26 at the break. In the third quarter, Huron broke away, scoring 13 points, while limiting the Bulldogs to seven points, taking a 41-33 advantage into the fourth frame.
In the fourth quarter, Ann Arbor outscored Chelsea 9-8 for the game's final outcome.
Darwin led the Bulldogs with eight points and 13 rebounds. Rabbitt added eight points, four rebounds and two assists, while Schwarze and Benjamin each had five points. Benjamin also had four rebounds and four assists.
Senior forward Anna Foley and Hollandsworth each netted four points, while Bentley had three points and senior center Nellie Daniels and Dunn each had two points for Chelsea.
The Bulldogs committed 15 turnovers, to Huron's five.
The River Rats controlled the paint outscoring Chelsea 38-26 down low.
The Bulldogs next host Ann Arbor Huron Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
On Saturday, Chelsea travels to Ann Arbor Pioneer for a contest at 5:30 p.m.
In a fresh twist, the Bulldogs will be traveling with Chelsea's boys' varsity basketball team to Pioneer and will be sharing the court with the boys against Huron. In both games, the girls' varsity will play the first game, followed by the boys' varsity match-up.
Freshman Basketball
Chelsea's freshman girls' basketball team lost to county rival Dexter 30-19 Jan. 15.
"We couldn't overcome Dexter's size and zone defense," said Chelsea coach Brian Boos.
Emily Shrosbree and Hannah Fitzsimmons led the host Bulldogs (5-7) each scoring five points.
Emily Cottrell added four points, while Amanda Gates and Amber Stebelton each had two points and Diana Uihlein one point for Chelsea.
On Jan. 14, the Bulldogs lost to Ann Arbor Huron 26-24.
"This was a hard fought game," Boos said. "This was a tough loss for the freshmen due to going into this game on a four-game winning streak."
Chelsea trailed by five points heading into the fourth quarter. With 20 seconds left, the Bulldogs had cut the River Rat lead to two points. Though fighting back, Chelsea was unable to get any closer before time ran out.
Fitzsimmons paced the Bulldogs with 13 points.
Cottrell chipped in five points, while Brooke Gier had two points for Chelsea.
On Jan. 10, the visiting Bulldogs beat Milan 40-17.
"It was a great combined effort at both ends of the court," Boos said.
Alex Liedel led Chelsea with 10 points.
Audrey Gadbury added nine points, while Fitzsimmons had eight points and Cottrell four points.
Katie Frankhart, Gier and Gates each finished with two points for the Bulldogs.
Chelsea next hosts Ann Arbor Huron Thursday at 4 p.m.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs travel to Ann Arbor Pioneer for a game at 1 p.m.
