The local organization has upgraded its Web site and debuted a new logo just in time for tonight's 2008 annual meeting at the Historic Chelsea Depot beginning with a dinner starting at 6:30 p.m.
"We've decided to update the logo with the kicking donkey because this is a major election year," said Rich Robinson, communications director for the WWD.† "We want to convey the message that we are serious about energizing Democrats here in western Washtenaw County."
Robinson calls 2008 "a year of great opportunity for the Democrats."
"Not only do we have a very good chance at taking back the White House, but we're looking to make some serious gains in the Congress," he said.†"Here locally, we think we have a great opportunity to defeat Tim Walberg and flip the 7th Congressional District to our side of the aisle."
Robinson added that the WWD† will be targeting Walberg's seat, as well as a few other key races†at the state, city and township levels.
The Web site (www.wwdems.org)†is more user-friendly and projects a more serious tone.†
"We intend to work hard this year to bring about some real change in national, state and local government," Robinson said.
Along with outlining the group's activities and objectives for the coming year during tonight's meeting, the WWDems have invited the Democratic candidates for the 7th Congressional District, state Sen. Mark Schauer and Sharon Renier, to address the group.
Other featured speakers include state Sen. Liz Brater, state Rep. Pam Byrnes and Scio Township Trustee Jim Dries.
"This is a meeting that I hope all area Democrats can attend," said WWDems Chairman Roy Schmidt. "(This) is an important election year, and we will be presenting our plan for action."
Admission is free, and Catering By Leslie is providing the food. Visit wwdems.org for more information.
