Chelsea grapplers win DeWitt championship

Chelsea wrestling captured the 10-team DeWitt Invitational last Friday, recording 182 points.

Placing second was the host Panthers with 158 points, while Lansing Eastern was third with 131 points.
"It's a confidence builder for our kids," said Chelsea coach Kerry Kargel about the invite crown. "They believe in themselves when they start winning. That's important. It (championship) helps with their self-confidence."
Individually, the Bulldogs earned five tournament championships.
At 112 pounds, freshman Dakota Cooley finished first with a perfect 5-0 record.
At 119, sophomore Jamin Breslin clinched a meet title with a 5-0 record.
Senior Evan Helvey (135 pounds) earned a championship with an unbeaten 5-0 record.
At 160, freshman Brandon Seagraves was first with a 5-0 mark, while freshman Travis Ostrowski was first at 171 with an unblemished 5-0 record.
For his efforts, Ostrowski was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament by his teammates.
Placing second overall individually for Chelsea with 4-1 records were sophomore Sam Parkanzky (103), junior Nick Doll (140), junior James Connelly (189) and sophomore Tim Rosentreter (heavyweight).
Placing third for the Bulldogs with 3-2 overall records were junior Ryan Patrick (130), senior Danny Ngo (130), freshman Evan Grau (145) and sophomore Kyle Colburn (152).
At 140, senior Matt Schultz finished 2-2 overall for Chelsea earning a third-place finish.
Last Thursday, the visiting Bulldogs lost to perennial state power Temperance Bedford 68-9 in a dual match.
"We have six freshmen wrestling varsity and four sophomores," Kargel said. "Bedford has eight seniors in their line-up. They're one of the best teams in the state. It was a good learning experience for our guys. We're still maturing."
At 103, Parkanzky lost by pin to Tom Fox in 4:21.
At 112, Cooley pinned Dale Hensley in 2:30.
Breslin won 7-6 over Tom Mayer at 119.
The Bulldogs lost nine of the next 11 matches by pin.
At 125, freshman Josh Hovater lost by pin in 1:59 to James Fisher.
Ngo lost 10-3 to Brandon Lewis at 130.
Helvey lost by pin to Dan Clark in 1:40 at 135.
Schultz lost a 14-1 major decision to Colin Arnold at 140.
Grau was pinned by Tony Alexander in 1:26 at 145.
Colburn lost by pin to Alex Ortman in 1:50 at 152.
Seagraves was pinned in 1:59 by Ian Kohlhofer at 160.
Freshman Tim Shoemaker lost by pin to Chris Baker in 3:25 at 171.
Connelly was pinned by Nick Wittenberg in 3:34 at 189.
Freshman Rick Douglas lost by pin to Mason Cole, while Rosentreter lost by pin to Alex Paulika in 3:30 at heavyweight.
On Dec. 30, Chelsea finished fourth at the Oxford Invitational.
The Bulldogs ended up with 99.5 points.
The host Wildcats placed first with 227 points.
Imlay City was second with 153.5 points, while East Jackson was third with 117 points.
Cooley captured a tournament title at 112 defeating Armada's Evan Cusumano on a 16-0 technical fall in the championship match.
Breslin was second at 125, losing 17-8 in the final to Imlay City's Mike Guerrero.
Helvey was second at 135 losing by pin in 3:10 in the final to Oxford's Bobby Rhodes.
Ngo placed third overall at 130 defeating Shawn Meixner of Redford Union 9-6 in the third-fourth-place match.
Sophomore Glen Cobb was fourth at 119 losing by technical fall 15-0 to Imlay City's David Elwart in the third-fourth-place bout.
Rosentreter was fourth at heavyweight losing 5-0 to Oxford's Aaron Moore in the third-fourth-place match.
Freshman Nick Hill was fourth at 171 losing to Grand Blanc's John Hudson 7-1 in the third-fourth-place contest.
Rounding out Chelsea's line-up at the invite included sophomore Kevin Rosentreter (0-1) at 160, Schultz (2-2) at 140, Grau (1-2) at 145, Colburn (1-2) at 152 and Connelly (0-2) at 189.
In the JV meet, Doll (140), Ostrowski (171) and Shoemaker (171) each finished first in their pool with perfect 3-0 records.
Freshman Brandon French (135) finished second with a 2-1 mark for the Bulldogs.
Sophomore Ben Christie (152) and freshman Andrew Lavanseler (145) each finished with 2-1 records, while freshman Rigel Bruening (119), sophomore George Clark (heavyweight), Zack Sexton (119) and Hovater (125) each ended up 1-2. Freshman Jake Grambau (189) was 0-3 for Chelsea.
The Bulldogs next travel to Tecumseh for a match Thursday at 6 p.m.
On Saturday, Chelsea visits Athens to participate in its invitational at 9 a.m.
On Jan. 18, the Bulldogs host a tri-meet with Adrian and Ann Arbor Huron at 6 p.m.
