The third member of the board is David E. Rutledge, elected as the 2008 vice chairman.
The Road Commission board is appointed by the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners.
To formulate policy and provide oversight, each board member is appointed to a six-year staggered term; that is, one commissioner is appointed every two years.
Veigel has served on the road board since January 1991, and has previously held the positions of both chair and vice-chair of the WCRC Board throughout his term of appointment.
His current term will expire Dec. 31, 2008, unless re-appointed by the County Commission.
A graduate of Ann Arbor Pioneer High School, Veigel is a longtime resident of Washtenaw County and Ypsilanti.
He graduated from Local 252 IBEW with a four-year electrical apprenticeship in 1958, is a U.S. Army veteran, and has held a multitude of prominent public service positions in the county that span more than 40 years.
Over the years, Veigel has acquired a strong background and leadership in labor relations and union negotiations/management, serving for the Huron Valley Central Labor Council AFL-CIO, as well as in many capacities for the IBEW Local 252.
Veigel has been president of the Huron Valley Central Labor Council AFL-CIO since 1969, a member since 1964 and has also held the positions of secretary, treasurer and vice-president.
Additionally, Veigel is a member of both the national and state AFL-CIO General Boards, and is a member of the National AFL-CIO Speakers Bureau.
He was just reappointed to serve as the Road Commission's representative on the Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation Commission, a position he has held since 2000.
Veigel has served on numerous committees and boards, including the Michigan United Way, the Washtenaw County CETA, the Ypsilanti City Compensation Committee, the University of Michigan Board of Directors for Replacement Hospital, and the Ypsilanti Township Construction Board of Appeals.
Rutledge has served as a road commissioner since January 2005, and Prater was appointed to another six-year term in January 2007.
