Chelsea athletics make mark in SEC and state competitions

It was another memorable year for Chelsea athletics in 2006.

The Bulldogs not only made their mark in the Southeastern Conference, but at the state level, as well.
Here's a look back:
Jan. 12 - Chelsea's boys' basketball team lost to Haslett 49-47 in the championship game of the Bulldogs' Holiday Classic. The No. 8-ranked Vikings tipped in a rebound at the buzzer to win the contest.
Jan. 12 - The Bulldog hockey team defeated Salem 9-3 scoring six first period goals. Chelsea, ranked No. 4 in the state, improved its overall record to 11-0-2 on the season.
Jan. 19 - Chelsea bowling topped Ann Arbor Pioneer 16-14. With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 4-0 in the Washawee Conference. Austin Herter led Chelsea rolling a 266 and a 247 for a 513 series.
Jan. 26 - Bulldog volleyball defeated Adrian in a five-set marathon 20-25, 25-23, 16-25, 25-23, 16-14. Sarah Iverson led Chelsea with 13 kills. Ann Kendzicky added 10 kills and four blocks.
Feb. 2 - Chelsea wrestling captured the 10-team Dexter Invitational. "That was the best we've wrestled all season," said Chelsea coach Kerry Kargel.
Feb. 2 - Chelsea's boys' basketball team defeated county rival host Dexter 56-46 in front of approximately 2,200 fans.
Feb. 9 - Bulldog boys' swimming and diving team participated in a tri-meet at Battle Creek Lakeview. Chelsea defeated Portage Northern 113-63 and lost to the host Spartans 106-74.
Feb. 9 Chelsea's boys' basketball team overwhelmed Saline 54-10. The No. 8-ranked Bulldogs have won nine out of their last 10 ballgames.
Feb. 9 - Bulldog offensive linemen C.J. Boyer (6-foot-3, 265) and Levi Breeze (6-7, 270) signed to play football at Saginaw Valley State and Central Michigan University, respectively.
Feb. 16 - Chelsea's No. 1-ranked bowling team defeated Lenawee Christian Academy 30-0. Austin Herter led the Bulldogs rolling a 235. Luke Waterbury also recorded a 226 for Chelsea.
Feb. 23 - Chelsea wrestling captured a district title beating Ypsilanti 36-34 in the final. Individually, Chad Schiller (145 pounds), A.J. Suffety (189) and Drew Wint (152) qualified for the state regional meet.
Feb. 23 - In the Temperance Bedford Invitational, Bulldog volleyball advanced to the Silver Division final losing to Livonia Stevenson.
Feb. 23 - Chelsea's boys' basketball team (13-3) lost to host Temperance Bedford 53-49 snapping a nine-game winning streak. The Mules finished the game 9-of-12 from three-point range.
March 2 - Chad Schiller and A.J. Suffety qualified for the Division II state wrestling meet. Schiller (42-6) advanced to the final in the 145-pound weight class. Suffety (41-11) qualified at 189.
March 2 - Chelsea's boys' swimming and diving team finished second at the Southeastern Conference White Division meet. The Bulldogs ended up with 313 points. Chelsea's Rick Kinsey captured league titles in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle.
March 9 - Bulldog hockey bowed out of the Division III state playoffs losing to Dearborn Divine Child 4-1 in the regional final. Chelsea finished the season 17-7-3 overall. The 17 wins were a school record.
March 9 - Chelsea's boys' basketball team defeated rival Dexter 63-53 in the regular season finale. Junior Nate Schwarze led the Bulldogs with a season-high 24 points.
March 9 - Behind senior Sarah Iverson's 40 kills, Chelsea volleyball won a Class B state district championship. The Bulldogs defeated Fowlerville 25-10, 25-16, 25-22 to capture the title.
March 9 - Former Chelsea standout Ali Mann was named first-team All-Mid-American Conference in women's basketball for Bowling Green State University. The 6-foot-1 junior tri-captain led the Falcons with a 14.7 scoring average.
March 16 - Bulldog basketball captured a Class B district championship beating Milan 75-53. Senior forward John Mantel (6-foot-8) led Chelsea (19-4) with a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds. He also blocked four shots.
March 16 - Chelsea volleyball beat Ida 25-21, 17-25, 16-25, 25-14, 15-7 to win a Class B state regional title. Sarah Iverson had 39 kills and junior Ann Kendzicky 27 kills to lead the Bulldogs.
March 16 - Senior Cody Schiller ended up 1-2 overall at the Division II state wrestling final at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Schiller ended the year with a 43-8 overall record at 145 pounds. Senior A.J. Suffety finished sixth in the state in the 189-pound weight class at the Division II final. Suffety finished with a 44-14 overall mark.
March 16 - Chelsea's boys' swimming and diving team finished 18th at the Division II state final at Eastern Michigan University. Bulldog senior Sean Cleary placed fourth in the one-meter diving competition with 405.35 points to lead Chelsea.
March 23 - Detroit Renaissance ended Chelsea's season defeating the Bulldogs 55-48 in a boys' basketball Class B state regional semifinal. Senior forward John Mantel led Chelsea with 16 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots. All-State guard and University of Oregon recruit Tajuan Porter paced the Phoenix with a game-high 30 points. The Bulldogs finished the year with a 19-5 overall record.
March 23 - Chelsea volleyball lost to Grand Rapids South Christian 25-10, 25-14, 25-15 in the Class B state semifinals at Western Michigan University. Sarah Iverson led the Bulldogs (36-20-6) with nine kills.
March 30 - Senior forward John Mantel and junior guard Nate Schwarze were named co-MVP of Chelsea basketball. Mantel averaged 16 points and nine rebounds, while Schwarze averaged 10 points per game for the Bulldogs.
March 30 - Chelsea senior defenseman Ryan Ruikka was named to the state's Dream Team selected by the Michigan High School Hockey Coaches Association. Ruikka, Bulldog MVP, is the first Chelsea player ever chosen for the elite squad. He finished the year with nine goals and 21 assists for 30 points.
April 6 - Chelsea's girls' soccer team defeated Saline 1-0. Senior Jaime Franks scored the game-winner with less than a minute remaining. The victory over the traditionally strong Hornets was the Bulldogs' first since 1997.
April 6 - Chelsea's Kendra Moyle, 15, and partner Andy Seitz earned a silver medal in pairs skating at the World Junior Figure Skating Championship in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
April 6 - Bulldog senior third baseman Hannah Myers committed to Grand Rapids Junior College for softball.
April 6 - Chelsea senior outfielder-pitcher Joe Welton committed to Aquinas College for baseball.
April 6 - Bulldog softball opened their season sweeping Milan in a doubleheader 10-0, 3-2.
April 20 - In its season opener, Emily Hardcastle led Chelsea's girls' golf team over Ann Arbor Huron 208-224. The junior shot a 44 besting the field.
April 20 - Chelsea senior Emily Woodruff committed to play basketball at Tiffin University in Ohio. The 5-foot-10 swing player was a four-year varsity performer for the Bulldogs.
April 27 - Bulldog softball won the DeWitt Invitational finishing with a perfect 3-0 record.
April 27 - Chelsea senior Maggie Dusbiber committed to play volleyball at Defiance College in Ohio.
April 27 - The Bulldog girls' track and field squad finished first at the Corunna Invitational with 93 points. The Chelsea foursome of Jessica Lodewyk, Athena Eyster, Nicole Bougher and Rachel Severin placed first in the 6,400-meter relay with a school record time of 22:41.0.
May 4 - Chelsea's girls' soccer team defeated Adrian 7-0. With the win, the Bulldogs (7-1) shut out seven of their eight opponents this season.
May 4 - The Bulldog boys' track and field team placed third at the Mason Invitational. Senior Ian Girard led Chelsea finishing first in the 3,200-meter run with a meet record time of 9:28.
May 4 - Chelsea's boys' tennis team captured the Temperance Bedford Invitational with 21 points.
May 18 - Emily Hardcastle shot a career-best 40 in Chelsea's girls' golf loss to Division I No. 2-ranked Ann Arbor Pioneer 178-203.
May 18 - Chelsea senior pitcher Tawny McSweeney committed to play softball at Siena Heights University.
May 25 - Bulldog girls' track and field team finished third at the Division II state regional meet at Linden. Chelsea recorded 61 points. Senior Rachel Severin placed first in the 3,200-meter run in 11:36.7 to lead the Bulldogs.
May 25 - Chelsea's boys' track and field team placed seventh at the Division II state regional meet at Linden. Senior Ian Girard led the Bulldogs finishing first in the 1,600-meter run in 4:25.5 and first in the 800-meter run in 1:59.1.
May 25 - Winning seven of eight flights, Chelsea's boys' tennis team captured the Division III state regional title. The regional crown was the Bulldogs' fourth straight championship.
June 1 - Chelsea's girls' track and field team won the Southeastern Conference White Division title finishing first in seven events.
June 1 - The Bulldog boys' track and field team placed first in the Southeastern Conference White Division meet. Senior Ian Girard won the 3,200- and 1,600-meter runs, while sophomore Evan Carpenter won the 110- and 300-meter hurdles for Chelsea.
June 1 - Chelsea senior third baseman-pitcher Robbie Moffett signed with Bowling Green State University for baseball.
June 1 - Bulldog senior Jaime Franks committed to play women's soccer at Kalamazoo College.
June 8 - Chelsea's boys' track and field team placed eighth at the Division II state meet in Grand Rapids. Leading the Bulldogs was the 3,200-meter relay foursome of Riley Feeney, Brendan Smith, Ian Girard and Al Stewart who finished first in 8:02.4. Girard, who'll run at Michigan State University next year, also placed third in the 1,600-meter run in a school record 4:17.66 and third in the 800-meter run in 1:55.0.
June 8 - The Bulldogs' girls' soccer team lost to rival Dexter 1-0 in double overtime in the Division II state district semifinal. "This was an unbelievable game," said Chelsea coach Chris Orlandi. "Both sides were at their best and the intensity was incredible." Chelsea finished 15-4 overall on the year. Dexter (19-1), ranked No. 3 in the state, would eventually reach the state semifinals before losing.
June 8 - Chelsea softball lost to Jackson Lumen Christi 7-5 in a first round Division II state district match up.
June 8 - The Bulldog quartet of Jessica Lodewyk, Rachel Severin, Athena Eyster and Nicole Bougher placed fourth in the 3,200-meter relay in a personal best 9:45.6 at the Division II state meet in Grand Rapids. As a team, Chelsea recorded six points.
June 8 - Bulldog junior Emily Hardcastle led Chelsea posting a two-day score of 169 (82-87) at the Division II girls' golf state match at Grand Valley State University.
June 8 - Chelsea's boys' tennis team finished ninth at the Division III state match at Kalamazoo College. The Bulldogs ended up with eight points.
June 22 - Chelsea baseball lost to Escanaba 11-5 in the Division II state semifinals in Battle Creek. The Bulldogs finished the season with a 28-11 overall record.
June 22 - Junior keeper Maggie Manville was named Bulldog girls' soccer MVP. She concluded the season with a save percentage of 82 and a goals against average of 0.74 earning first-team All-Southeastern Conference and All-District honors.
June 22 - Chelsea senior keeper Nikolai Voicechovski committed to play men's soccer at Siena Heights University.
June 29 - Bulldog senior outfielder Joe Welton was named to the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association Dream Team after batting .400 with a team-high 21 doubles. Selected second team All-State in Division II were juniors pitcher Dan Augustine and shortstop Adam Connell.
July 13 - Seniors Kelly Jo Milliken and Hannah Myers were named co-MVPs of Chelsea softball. Milliken, a shortstop-pitcher led the Bulldogs with a .429 batting average and 35 RBIs, while Myers, a third baseman, batted .298 with nine doubles and one triple. Chelsea ended the year with a 21-15 overall record.
July 20 - Chelsea's Corey Block was selected to participate in the field hockey Junior Olympics in Virginia Beach, Va. Block, a junior-to-be at Chelsea High School, was the only Michigan played chosen for the event.
July 27 - Chelsea offensive lineman C.J. Boyer competed in the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association east-West All-Star Game at Michigan State University's Spartan Stadium. Boyer's West squad lost 22-15.
Aug. 17 - Chelsea's Wayne Welton received the Michigan High School Athletic Association's Allen W. Bush Award for service. Welton has served as Bulldog baseball coach and athletic director for the past 28 years.
Aug. 24 - The Bulldogs' boys' golf team finished fourth at the Tecumseh Invitational with a score of 330. Individually, junior Elliot Marshall led Chelsea shooting a 78.
Aug. 31 - Chelsea football defeated Novi 28-14 in its season opener in the Big Day Prep Showdown II at Eastern Michigan University's Rynearson Stadium.
Aug. 31 - The Bulldogs' girls' tennis team defeated Temperance Bedford 8-0 in a dual match.
Sept. 14 - Chelsea's girls' basketball team beat Temperance Bedford 56-46. With the victory, the Bulldogs improved their overall record to 2-1 on the young season.
Sept. 21 - The Bulldogs' girls' cross country team finished first at the New Boston Huron Invitational with 50 points. Senior Amanda McKenzie placed second in 19:24 to pace Chelsea.
Sept. 28 - Chelsea's girls' swimming and diving team defeated Adrian 124-56 in a dual meet.
Sept. 28 - The Bulldogs' girls' tennis team blanked Brooklyn Columbia Central 8-0. Chelsea's No. 1 singles player Liz Hood bested Bailey O'Shea 6-4, 6-4 to lead the Dawgs.
Oct. 5 - Chelsea's boys' soccer team beat Marshall 4-3. With the win, the Bulldogs (5-3-3) are unbeaten in five of their last six games.
Oct. 5 - In a clash of undefeated teams, Chelsea (5-1) lost to host Saline (6-0) 37-28 in front over 6,500 spectators.
Oct. 5 - The Bulldogs' girls' tennis team defeated rival Dexter 7-1 in a dual match.
Oct. 5 - Former Chelsea standout Tony Scheffler is three games into his rookie season with the NFL's Denver Broncos. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound tight end, who was a two-time All-Mid-American Conference selection, has one reception for nine yards so far for the Broncos.
Oct. 12 - Chelsea football defeats rival Dexter 33-29 as senior receiver Nate Schwarze hauled in a 20-yard touchdown reception from junior quarterback Jeff Adams as time expired for the win.
Oct. 12 - The Bulldog girls' tennis team won the Southeastern Conference White Division title winning seven of the tournament's eight flights.
Oct. 19 - Chelsea's girls' basketball team defeated Ypsilanti Lincoln 43-33. Senior forward Rachel Fitzsimmons led the Bulldogs with 17 points, three blocks and two assists.
Oct. 26 - Chelsea's girls' tennis team finished 13th at the Division III state match in Grand Rapids. Bulldog Cathy Wijsman advanced to the state quarterfinals at No. 4 singles before losing 6-0, 6-0 to eventual runner-up Katie Boes of Holland Christian. The No. 2 doubles duo of Lauren Verardi and Katie MacFarlan lost to eventual state runner-up Jessica Langnass and Sarah Atkinson of Bloomfield Hills Andover 6-0, 6-0. Maggie Valle lost to eventual state runner-up Jane Lent of East Grand Rapids 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles in the second round.
Oct. 26 - Bulldog boys' soccer lost to rival Dexter 2-0 in the Division II state district final.
Nov. 2 - Chelsea football defeated Carleton Airport 21-13 in a first round district state playoff game.
Nov. 2 - The Bulldogs' boys' cross country team finished second at the Division II state regional meet at New Boston. Senior Brendan Smith paced Chelsea finishing sixth overall in 17:14.
Nov. 2 - Junior Haley Eisenhardt and freshman Megan Hardcastle were named Chelsea equestrian co-MVP.
Nov. 2 - Chelsea's girls' cross country team finished third at the Division II state regional at New Boston. Senior Amanda McKenzie led the Bulldogs placing second in 19:24.
Nov. 2 - Maggie Valle was named Chelsea's girls' tennis team MVP. Valle captured a regional title at No. 2 singles for the Bulldogs.
Nov. 9 - The Bulldogs' girls' cross country team finished ninth at the Division II state meet at Michigan International Speedway. Senior Amanda McKenzie placed 12th individually with a time of 18:36 to pace the Bulldogs.
Nov. 9 - No. 2-ranked Chelsea (10-1) defeated Gibraltor Carlson 48-21 to win a Division III football state district championship.
Nov. 9 - Chelsea's boys' cross country team placed 17th at the Division II state meet at Michigan International Speedway. Individually, senior Brendan Smith led the Bulldogs finishing 19th with a clocking of 16:03.
Nov. 9 - The Bulldogs' girls' swimming and diving team finished fourth overall at the Southeastern Conference meet.
Nov. 9 - Chelsea's girls' basketball team beat Ypsilanti Lincoln 53-17. With the victory, the Bulldogs (13-5, 10-3) clinched a share of the Southeastern Conference White Division title.
Nov. 16 - Chelsea lost to Fowlerville 28-25 on a last second touchdown pass in a Division III football state regional final at Jerry Niehaus Field. The Bulldogs ended the year 10-2 overall.
Nov. 16 - Bulldog senior volleyball player Ann Kendzicky signed with defending Division II national champion Grand Valley State University.
Nov. 16 - Senior Brendan Smith was named Chelsea's boys' cross country MVP.
Nov. 23 - Chelsea's girls' basketball team captured a Class B state district championship defeated Ida 42-39. Junior swing player Annie Hollandsworth drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer to win it for the Bulldogs.
Nov. 23 - The Bulldogs' girls' swimming and diving team finished 15th at the Division state meet at Eastern Michigan University. Senior Jillian Drow placed second in the one-meter diving competition with 439.50 points to lead Chelsea.
Nov. 23 - Senior Reece Hammer was named Chelsea boys' soccer MVP. Hammer was named All-Southeastern Conference White Division first team. Senior Mike Sauers, named Bulldog Offensive Player of the Year, was selected third team Division II All-State for Chelsea.
Nov. 23 - Senior David Maveal scored three goals for a hat trick leading Chelsea's boys' hockey team to a season-opening 6-2 victory over Canton.
Nov. 30 - Chelsea's Brendan Smith signed with the University of Missouri-Rolla for men's cross country.
Nov. 30 - Bulldog Nate Schwarze (5-foot-11, 165 pounds) was selected first team Class B All-State. The senior finished the season with 54 receptions for 918 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Dec. 7 - Chelsea's Brad Bush was named Heritage Newspapers-West Coach of the Year after leading the Bulldogs to a 10-2 overall record, a Southeastern Conference White Division championship, a district title and a spot in the regional final before losing 28-25 to Fowlerville on a last-second TD pass.
Dec. 14 - Senior swing player Micah Hudson scored 33 points in Chelsea's 95-52 win over Williamston in boys' basketball action.
Dec. 14 - Bulldog wrestling finished 3-2 overall at the Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central Invitational. Freshmen Dakota Cooley and Nick Hill led Chelsea each ending up 5-0 overall at 112 and 171 pounds, respectively.
Dec. 21 - Chelsea hockey finished 1-1 at the prestigious Division III Showcase in Gaylord. The Bulldogs beat Big Rapids 3-1 and lost to Gaylord 3-1.
Dec. 21 - The Bulldogs' boys' swimming and diving team defeated Pinckney 130-53 in a dual meet.
Dec. 21 - Chelsea volleyball beat Ann Arbor Huron in a dual match 19-25, 25-8, 25-12, 25-16. Senior outside hitter/middle blocker Ann Kendzicky led the Bulldogs with 13 kills.
